Family Tradition: NCAA Championships Are Filled With Legacy Wrestlers

Of the 330 wrestlers competing at the NCAA Championships this weekend, at least 11 have family members who have significant wrestling accomplishments. Below are all 11 along with their family legacies. 

157 pounds: No. 3 David Carr (Iowa State)

Father: Nate, three-time NCAA champion for Iowa State (1981-83) and 1988 Olympic bronze medalist

Uncle: Fletcher, two-time All-American for Tampa (6th in 1972, 4th in 1973), two-time D2 NCAA champion (1972 and 1973), and NAIA All-American (5th in 1970).

Uncle: Joe, two-time All-American for Kentucky (3rd in 1975 and 1976) and D2 All-American for Ashland (5th in 1973).

Uncle: Jimmy, All-American for Kentucky (5th in 1977) and 1972 Olympian

Uncle: Mike, All-American for West Virginia (7th in 1988)

Brother: Nate Carr, Jr., 2007 NJCAA champion for Iowa Central

125 pounds: No. 4 Drew Hildebrandt (Central Michigan)

Sister: Sarah, 2018 World silver medalist, four-time WCWA finalist for King, two-time WCWA champion

141 pounds: No. 8 Jaden Abas (Stanford) 

Father: Gerry Abas, four-time All-American (1992-95) and three-time finalist (1993-95) for Fresno State.

Uncle: Stephen, four-time All-American (1998-99, 2001-02), three-time NCAA champion (1999, 2001-02), and a 2004 Olympic silver medalist. 

149 pounds: No. 9 Legend Lamer (Cal Poly) 

Father: Chad, four-time D2 All-American (1992, 1994-96) and three-time D2 NCAA champion for South Dakota State (1994-96)

Mother: Ann, 10,000 meter champion at the 1994 outdoor D2 track & field championships.

184 pounds: No. 12 Nelson Brands (Iowa)

Father: Terry, two-time NCAA champion (1990 and 1992), two-time World champion (1993 and 1995), 2000 Olympic bronze medalist, associate head coach at Iowa.

Uncle: Tom, was a three-time NCAA champion (1990-92), 1993 World champion, 1996 Olympic champion, and head coach at Iowa. 

149 pounds: No. 20 Josh Heil (Campbell)

Brother: Dean, three-time All-American (2015-17) and two-time NCAA champion (2016-17) for Oklahoma State.

174 pounds: No. 20 Trey Munoz (Arizona State)

Father: Mark, two-time All-American (2000-01) and a 2001 NCAA champion for Oklahoma State, and a 14-6 MMA record.

285 pounds: No. 21 Tate Orndorff (Ohio State)

Father: Dave, finalist at the 1988 NCAA Championships for Oregon State.

Brother: Tanner, three-time NCAA championships qualifier (2017-19) for Utah Valley.

165 pounds: No. 22 Kennedy Monday (North Carolina)

Father: Kenny, three-time finalist for Oklahoma State (1982-84), 1984 NCAA champion, 1988 Olympic gold medalist, 1989 World champion, 1991 World silver medalist, 1992 Olympic silver medalist, and a three-time Olympian (1988, 1992, and 1996). 

Uncle: Mike, two-time NCAA tournament qualifier — once for Arizona State in 1976 and once for Oklahoma in 1979.

Brother: Quincy, two-time NCAA tournament qualifier (2019-20) for Princeton.

— Chad Lamer wrestled for the Hawkeye Wrestling Club, where he was coached by Tom Brands. 

— Nelson Brands won three Iowa high school state titles for Iowa City West. Tom and Terry combined to win three Iowa high school titles for Sheldon.
