Berge and Young take the mat for the Hawkeyes and Nittany Lions. Different opponents, of course. They just take the mat at nearly the same time. Young and Berge both lead in the second. Austin O'Connor out to a commanding early lead in the third. Deakin also leads to continue our tour of the highly seeded and notable. Berge wins 12-4. Deakin crusing 9-3 late in the third. Young winning 7-1 in the third.

Brayton with the rideout and 2-0 win. Lovett with the upset! 3-2 over Jacques.

UVA's McCoy appears to beat van der Merwe 4-3 but Stanford challenges. Denied, McCoy wins over a talented New Jersey native. OR WAS IT? The bracket I'm looking at now says RVDM over McCoy 3-2. Must have initially misread what happened. RVDM advances!

Will Lewan with the takedown in sudden victory to beat Holden Heller of Hofstra.

Hidlay pouring it on Petite of Buffalo. Wolfpacker looking for bonus. 9-3 going into the third. Hidlay majors 14-5.

Jacob Wright and Justin Thomas the only other bout still going besides Hidaly vs Petit. It's 202 late in the third. RT not a factor. We'll go to SV. Now to tiebreakers. Wright on bottom first, escapes quickly. Ditto for Thomas. SV-2 coming up. Now score after 10 minutes. Final ultimate tiebreaker periods. Thomas down first. Wright sits, stands and turns in with 13 seconds left on the clock. Wrights RT advantage is 19 seconds. He goes underneath. He's out in under five seconds. He'll have criteria advantage. Thomas charging in. Wright gets warned for stalling. His first stall call. He fends off a Thomas attack. 1 second, Wright wins! Upset win by criteria!

And we conclude today's action with a criteria win. After over 10 and a half minutes of wrestling, someone was finally losing late in the match and that meant the last 20 seconds were action-packed. Criteria doing its job once again, as it always does, time after time. Good job criteria.

AJ Ferrari takes the mat for his first NCAA match. Quick takedown over McCracken of Kent State. It's now 8-1 and looks like Ferrari is gonna put it in cruise control ;)

Purdue's Tommy Penola with a tied score against Greg Bulsak of Clarion early in the third, 2-2. Penola gets the TD but Bulsak the quick escape. Penola holds on for the slight upset 6-4.

#9 seed Noah Adams leading Benjamin Adams by 5 in the third.

#13 seed Tanner Sloan gives up the first takedown but moves on to win 4-2

Michael Beard now takes the mat to try and send the 7th Nittany Lion to the second round. He's got a takedown and four nearfall to build a 6 point cushion. Beard wins by major.

The woefully underseeded #26 Jake Woodley leading 3-1 over #7 Rocky Elam in the third. Woodley holds on for the upset (at least according to seed).

Caffey and Bonaccorsi take care of business and move on.

OWEN PENTZ WITH THE BIGGEST UPSET OF THE TOURNAMENT. #31 Pentz of NDSU pins #2 Eric Schultz of Nebraska in the second period. Schultz was leading at the time. Incredible. A #1 would have to lose on the backside to a #32 or #33 to to be a bigger upset. Goodness.

Wyatt Hendrickson of Air Force must have been double parked because he pinned Luke Luffman in less time than I had to type this sentence. Falcon heavyweight is on to round two.

Gable Steveson trying to match Hendrickson and win the Gorrian with a first period pin as well.

Kerkvliet romping over Birchmeier of Navy.

Joe Doyle of Binghamton goes headlock city on #3 Matt Stencel. No fall is called though. Wow how did Stencel get out of that? 7-4 lead for Doyle in the first. There is a long review and it's actually 5-3, still in the first. Stencel fights back to win 8-5.

VT's Catke and UNI's Isley in a low scoring, tactical heavyweight bout, 1-1 in the third. Isley gets the clutch takedown with five seconds left to win 3-1. Big one (literally) for the Panther Train.

Mason Parris and Tony Cassioppi both on the mat right now. Cass wins by major. As does Elam, who blanks Metz 11-0. All-American Trent Hillger gets a nice 5-1 win over Oklahoma's Heindselman.

Laird edges Schuyler in a battle of former 197-pounders and we've reached the end of round 1.
