Zhamalov got on the radar for a lot of Americans when he won Russian nationals in October in a bracket that included two-time defending World champion Zaurbek Sidakov. Sidakov was defeated by 2014 World champion and 2017 World silver Khetik Tsabolov, and then Zhamalov defeated Sidakov in the finals.

Now, Sidakov did come back and defeat Zhamalov in a simulation training match prior to the World Cup. However, Russia decided to stick with Zhamalov: a decision that paid off.

Zhamalov has been on the international scene for a while. Before winning Russian Nationals in 2020, he won Junior silver in 2018, U23 gold in 2019, Russian silver in 2019, and Yarygin silver in 2020.

So what does Russia do now at 74 kg? They will most likely have another national tournament prior to the Olympics to determine the spot, similar to the US. If not that, they will send Zhamalov, Sidakov, and Tsablov to an international tournament to settle it there. Who Russia sends could have a big impact on the US chances of bringing home a gold medal in Tokyo.
