Main Event

Spencer Lee vs Zach Sanders

1st period: We're starting out with one of the biggest names in all of wrestling, two-time NCAA champ (and likely three-timer if NCAAs didn't get canceled this year) Spencer Lee versus Zach Sanders. A small crowd as per covid but they are all cheering for Spencer right now. A quick single-leg turns into two for Lee. Two gut wrenches and its 6-0. Sander shoots a double, Spencer counters with a whip over pancake, and Sanders is on his back! It's a pinfall for Spencer Lee in the first!

Devyn Gomez vs Erin Golston

1st period: Devyn Gomez stepping in as a late replacement for Sarah Hildebrandt. Golston shoots a single leg within the first three seconds and finished by switching to a double leg. Golston transitions nicely into a lace and quickly picks up four turns. After getting up 10-0 Golston moves up the body before Gomez can get off her back and secures the first period pin.

Austin DeSanto vs Bryce Meredith

1st period: Two falls in two matches, we are off and running. Time for one of the most anticipated bouts of the night. DeSanto doesn't have a lot of freestyle experience but he is a fan favorite. DeSanto was in a shot early but it was stalemated. Snap down by Meredith and DeSanto is out of position. Meredith gets two turns from this sequence, bent leg and claw ride got two turns for Meredith and he takes a 4-0 lead. DeSanto shoots in, but it's Meredith who gets the points on a go-behind. He leads 6-0, and that's how the period ends.

2nd period: Heavy hands but no score in the first minute. Now DeSanto in on a shot. Meredith rolls him through again. But the points are awarded to DeSanto! Oh no, they're changed to Meredith, who initiated the move, at least as far I can tell. We'll go to a review to settle it. And the challenge from DeSanto's corner's challenge fails so it's one more point for Meredith. Now DeSanto in on a shot, and he'll finish for his first points of the match. It's 9-2. They go out of bounds in par terre and Meredith gets hit with caution and one for fleeing. They go back to par terre. No turns, back to neutral with less than a minute to go. DeSanto shoots, Meredith turns him again to run the score to 11-3. One point from a tech with precious few seconds left. And that's how it ends. Meredith's superior freestyle gives him the dominant win, 11-3.

Jaydin Eierman vs Vladimer Khinchegashvili

1st period: Vlado looked great at Beat the Streets, let's see what he looks like tonight. Eierman on now home soil in Iowa City/Corallville. Vlado really trying to work the two on one. One minute in and still no score. Right after tying that, Eierman shoots, but Vlad disappears on him and comes gets to a leg himself. However, Eierman manages to get his hips on top and lock his legs. The officials rule 2 points for Eierman, but we've got a challenge from Khinche's corner. And it is overruled, so the score is back to 0-0. Eierman gets put on the shot clock and fails to score so Vlado gets on the board first.

2nd period: Eierman comes out swinging in the second with and early blast double and blows right through Khinche. Eierman keeps up the pace this time with more of a low double and scores another takedown, he now leads 4-1. 1:45 left and now it's Khinche on a shot, but he can't finish and it's stalemated. Another shot from Vlado with 45 seconds to go, but again it's stalemated. Eierman still leads 4-1. And that's how the match will end. Eierman with an impressive 4-1 victory over an Olympic champion.

Pat Lugo vs Matthew Kolodzik

1st period: Two All-Americans are wrestling at 153-pounds. Five thousand extra dollars is on the line for the winner. Scramble early in the bout, Kolodzik's whizzer stops the takedown but Lugo pulls Kolo up at the edge of the mat and gets the step out. It's 1-0 for Lugo. Single leg for Kolo, Lugo defends Back to neutral with less than a minute left in the period. Shot, reshot, peak out for Kolo, he gets Lugo's back but Lugo wrestled free and it's still 1-0 in favor of Lugo. Kolodzik goes on the activity clock. And just after it expires Lugo gets another step out. And the period ends, Lugo holding a 3-0 lead.

2nd period: Snatch single for Lugo, he's driving Kolodzik out of bounds, and gets two as they go out. 5-0 for Lugo. And a clean double for Kolodzik who answers right back. 1:45 left on the clock, 5-2 for Lugo in neutral. Snap down go behind puts Lugo up by five again. Single leg for Kolodzik, Lugo tries to spin behind. It's stalemated. Lugo in on a shot in short time, he'll chew up valuable seconds. It's stalemated with five seconds left and that's it for Kolodzik. Lugo wins to the delight of the Iowa fans in attendance. 7-2 was the final.

Jordan Nelson vs Precious Bell

1st period: Precious Bell comes out shooting first. Her first shot is down blocked by Nelson, but one minute into the first period Bell gets on the board first with a nice far knee/ankle pick. Nelson with a shot, but Bell takes Nelson down with a crisp reattack.

2nd period: 25 seconds into the second period Bell with a lefty single leg. She now leads 6-0. Another single leg from Bell and she comes close to scoring, but Nelson defends. Now it's Nelson coming on strong and she shoots a strong blast double, but right before going out of bounds, Bell is able to plant her feet and pivot in and pick up a step out to lead 7-0. Now a double from Bell and she picks up another turn. Time expires and Bell wins 11-0.

Alex Marinelli vs James Green

1st period: Two-time world medalist James Green locking horns with the Bull. Green controlling the ties early but no much in the way of attacks. Marinelli fires off a couple shots and Green goes on the clock with a little over a minute to go in the first. Green can't penetrate Marinelli's defenses and gives up a point. Alex in on a shot but time runs out, Marinelli leads 1-0 after one period.

2nd period: Marinelli working in deep, but Green counters, get his hands behind Marinelli's legs and drives him off the mat for what looks to be four. Four is offers and confirmed. We'll get a challenge though. Challenge fails and it's 5-1 in favor of Green. Big move for the New Jerseyan who now trains at the SE-RTC in Blacksburg, VA. Marinelli answers with a duck under go behind to cut the deficit to two points. It's 5-3 with over a minute left in the match. Green can give up two and still hold criteria because of his four-pointer. Green now gets another passivity and goes on the clock with 37 seconds left. Marinelli shooting, Green circling and defending. And Green will give up one point but no more. Green will pick up an extra five-thousand for his victory over Marinelli, 5-4.

Michael Kemerer vs Tommy Gantt

1st period: Kemdog vs Gantt. Gantt gets in on a righty single, Kemerer trying to Jonesy, but loses it. However, he holds on Gantt's ankle and is able to hold on for a stalemate. 1:20 in and Gantt gets called for passive first. 1:20 to go and Gantt will go on the clock. A shot from Kemerer and Gantt stops him and exposes Kemerer and comes out on top. Scored 2 and 2. The challenge brick comes out from Gantt's corner, but he tells them to take it back. And the period comes to a close tied at 2.

2nd period: Nice snap to Dresser dump 30 seconds in and Kemdog takes the lead 4-2. Gantt snaps Kemerer but Kemerer gets in on a leg. Gantt rolls Kemerer through several times. It's a mad scramble. Not sure exactly who scored what and how but Gantt leads 10-4 with 30 seconds left. A double leg in short time gets Kemerer within 4, but that's as close as he gets. It's a victory and $5,000 for Tommy Gantt! The Wolfpacker wins 10-6.

Tony Cassioppi vs Nick Gwiazdowski

1st period: Our final and heaviest bout of the evening! Vintage Gwiz single to a crack back and he's got two. Looks for a lace but doesn't get it. Gwiz leads 2-0 after a minute. No scores after another minute. Gwiz with a level change and he's in deep in short time. Cassioppi scrambles to avoid danger. But not out of it yet. Time running out, and Giazdowski won't finish. Great scramble.

2nd period: Gwiz in early again and he'll finish this time to make it 4-0. Gwiz locks up a lace. This is trouble for Cass. And three spins makes its a tech fall for Nick Gwiazdowski! 10-0 win for the NC State NCAA champ.

That'll put a bow on the event. Very much appreciate the Hawkeye Wrestling Club for putting the event on and putting so many dollars in the pockets of these competitors. Thanks for following along and sorry for the typos!
