The second highest senior still available on the Class of 2021 Big Board and the #7 ranked 220 has chosen to continue his wrestling career at Northwestern University.

Bates chose Northwestern over Cornell and Indiana. The Indiana native will be reuniting with high school teammate Lucas Davison, the current Wildcat 197-lb starter. Davison's father, Keith, is still an assistant coach at Chesterton High School.

Bates native had a breakout Fargo 2019 where he defeated former Fargo champion Noah Pettigew while making the freestyle finals and finishing third in Greco. Although ranked at 220 lbs, Bates will be dropping down to 195 lbs. He took fifth at 2019 Super 32.

Bates will join #11 Joel Vandervere and #96 Carter Young as top-100 recruits from the class of 2021 for coach Matt Storniolo and the Northwestern Wildcats.
