Could a wrestling video game ever really work?

For those of us who have played any of the UFC games, you’d notice that the wrestling features aren’t really the best. But it’s honestly the closest thing we’ve got.

Anyway, back to the original question. With the UFC games being our best rubric, do you think a UWW wrestling game could work? Without looking at the controls, let’s look at some of the qualities that we could take from other games that could be added to the game.

Create-a-wrestler

Being able to customize your own competitor is a must. Create a competitor with a Jordan Burroughs double, a Helen Maroulis footsweep, Kamal Bey bodylock throw, or a hybrid of all three.

Madden-Style Ratings

If you’ve been paying attention, you know how important Madden ratings are to the NFL players. I’m pretty sure that this would be a huge deal for wrestlers too. There are a few guys and girls who obviously deserve to be in the coveted 99 club.

Career Mode

This one is pretty straightforward. Choose your wrestler, train them, win the tournaments, make the team, and try to become a World and Olympic champion. You’ll also be able to accumulate sponsors, sign deals, and move to a different RTC to train with different coaches.

Mortal Kombat’s Battle Mode

Beat the game by facing off with different wrestlers and beating the boss in the end. By beating the game you’ll unlock legends of the sport.

Challenge Mode

In challenge mode, you’ll have to complete tasks that happen throughout history. For example, the clinch with Karelin and Rulon or duplicate Burroughs’ broken ankle performance. Included in this will be wrestling in All-Star matches like Beat The Streets or Flo’s WNO-Pro cards.
