How Important Is Wrestling Sock Swag?

To some it might be trivial, but to those who know, wearing the right socks is everything.

There are basically two options – with subtle variations: high socks or no-shows. The most common look is to go with the high socks because, being the trendsetters that we are as wrestlers, the sweats get tucked into the socks. But there are some who opt to go no show like Nick Marable in 2016 when it’s time to throw down.

Robby Smith may be the most fashionable when it comes to sock swag as he consistently sports the high stars and stripes during matches. Despite being the frontrunner, Smith’s Greco brother Joe Rau gave him a run for his money at Final X - Rutgers when he rocked a pair that had the face of Oregon State Assistant Coach Nate Engel on them.

But we all know that a wrestler's socks are much more than just a fashion statement. In recent years, we have become aware of how the sock adjustment has become an important part of matches when it comes to gamesmanship. Kendall Cross mentions in the TERRY documentary how he attempted to buy some time in his match against Terry Brands by checking his shoelaces only to see that they were tied and couldn’t get him any breathing room. He could have gone with the sock adjustment instead.

It is a proven fact that 86.7% of the time, an in-match sock adjustment while trailing is a catalyst for a late comeback. (There was no research done at all. I completely made that up.)

But in all seriousness, as minuscule of a detail that the perfect pair of socks is, it’s really one of the most important.
