This is going to be a really good and really close dual. Read Seth Duckworth’s 5 Matchups That Could Flip The Oklahoma State vs Iowa State Dual. With five matchups like that, a lot of different scenarios can play out. Let’s take a look and see if the Cyclones can pull off the upset inside Hilton Coliseum.

IOWA STATE

Weight

OKLAHOMA STATE

#9 Alex Mackall

125

#4 Nick Piccininni

#16 Todd Small

133

Reece Witcraft

#8 Ian Parker

141

#18 Dusty Hone

Ryan Leisure

149

#3 Boo Lewallen

#3 David Carr

157

#20 Wyatt Sheets

Chase Straw

165

#9 Travis Wittlake

#11 Sammy Colbay

174

Andrew Shomers

#17 Marcus Coleman

184

#22 Anthony Montalvo

#20 Joel Shapiro

197

#9 Dakota Geer

#12 Gannon Gremmel

285

Austin Harris

125

Picc is going to be a heavy favorite here. He majored Mackall during their dual last year (watch below), and there’s a decent chance he does it again.

This was one of Seth’s matchups that could flip the dual, and while it’s not the craziest thing in the world to pick Witcraft in an upset, I’ll put Small down for a decision win.

OSU: 4, ISU: 3

141

Another match that could flip the dual (assuming Hone, who has wrestled in every dual for the Cowboys, wrestles), this one is going to be fun. Parker has solidified himself as a top-10 guy with his only losses this season being to #7 Demas and #5 McKee. Hone has really jumped a level this year, taking third at Southern Scuffle where he beat Tariq Wilson in the process. But Parker is still the favorite, he gets the theoretical decision.

ISU: 6, OSU: 4

149

Now, there is a chance Jarrett Degan comes back and wrestles, but I’m guessing we see Leisure against Boo. And if that’s the case, Leisure’s going to be fighting to not give up bonus. Boo has been healthy so far this season and has looked like one of, if not the, best guy in the country at 149. So, Lewallen by major decision.

OSU: 8, ISU: 6

157

Wyatt Sheets is good, but David Carr is really good, and I can’t get #9 Josh Humphreys beating Sheets 16-2 earlier this year out of my head. I think Carr will be fighting for bonus, but we’ll say Sheets holds it to a decision.

ISU: 9, OSU: 8

165

Chase Straw was a national qualifier last year, but he’s been on a tough run the past two weeks, and he’ll have his hands full with Wittlake. The Cowboy is fresh off of an impressive 9-2 win over #10 Jake Wentzel. However, Straw is tough and this is in Ames, so he keeps Wittlake to a theoretical normal decision.

OSU: 11, ISU 9

174

Andrew Shomers' first college weight class - 157. Sammy Colbary’s first college match - 285. No extra insight or anything, just a fun little side note. Shomer’s is solid, but Colbray’s the favorite.

ISU: 12, OSU: 11

184

This match is as much of a toss-up as any match in this dual. Montalvo is coming off of a big win over #8 Nino Bonaccorsi, but for the sake of the article we’ll say Coleman picks up the decision victory.

ISU: 15, OSU: 11

197

Shapiro’s off to a bit of a rough start in 2020, going just 3-5 against tough competition. Now he’s got his toughest opponent yet in 2019 AA Dakota Geer. Shapiro just lost 10-2 to both #16 Kordell Norfleet and #19 Tanner Sloan, so chalk it up as a major for Geer.

ISU: 15, OSU: 15

285

Gannon Gremmel is following up a national tournament qualifying season with a good junior season. He’s 16-7 and won the Southern Scuffle, a tournament Austin Harris went 0-2 at. Gremmel wins by theoretical major.

ISU: 18, OSU: 15

There you have it, that’s how Iowa State pulls off the upset. Now, obviously a lot of things could go differently and Oklahoma State can clearly win this dual. Either way, it should be a close dual, in a fun environment, with some great individual matches!
