Sammy Alvarez Picks Up Pair of Top-8 Wins

Rutgers true freshman Sammy Alvarez might have had the best performance of the entire Southern Scuffle field. He entered the 133-pound bracket as the fifth seed with a 10-4 record and advanced to the semifinals against the top seed, #5 Micky Phillippi of Pitt.

Phillippi is the highest-ranked opponent Alvarez has faced in his young career, but that didn't stop him from taking a second-period lead on Phillippi or icing the match with a late-match takedown.

In the finals, Alvarez continued his impressive run with a 5-4 decision over #8 Cam Sykora of North Dakota state. Sykora led that match 3-1 half-way through the second period, but a takedown and rideout in the second and another takedown in the third gave Alvarez the edge and the Southern Scuffle crown. Alvarez's performance is a good sign for an incredibly young Rutgers squad.

Lou DePrez Rebounds, Evens Series with Hidlay

Binghamton's Lou DePrez has been ranked as high as second this year, but a handful of losses dropped him to sixth before the 2020 Southern Scuffle. His first loss on the year came at the hands of NC State freshman Trent Hidlay.

DePrez had the chance to avenge his loss to Hidlay in the Southern Scuffle finals. While this upset was not huge numerically, as the #6 beat the #2, it was important for establishing 184 as not only one of the best weight classes this year but also as one with top-level parity.

While Zahid Valencia appears to be the hands-down favorite at 184 this year, Lou DePrez reminded everyone that he's one of the very best at this weight.

Wittlake Creeps Into Top 10 With Wins Over #10 Bullard and #9 Wentzel

Oklahoma State's Travis Wittlake entered the Southern Scuffle undefeated but having faced only one ranked opponent in Drexel's Ebed Jarrell. He was clearly good, but this tournament would be a litmus test of approximately how good.

Wittlake took out #9 Jake Wentzel of Pitt in the quarterfinals before falling to #7 Shane Griffith of Stanford in the semis. He rolled on the back side even earning a 9-3 decision over #10 Thomas Bullard for third.

While not an upset, Wittlake also beat Penn State true freshman Joe Lee in the consolation semis and proved that he's a real factor at 165 this year.

Two Upsets for Noah Adams En Route To Scuffle Title

Noah Adams, West Virginia's lone Southern Scuffle champ, had an impressive showing in Chattanooga. The 21st-ranked 197-pounder took out #16 Ethan Laird of Rider in the semis and #6 Nathan Traxler of Stanford in the finals.

Adams' win over Traxler was particularly impressive as he put Traxler on his back twice before ultimately pinning him in the first period.

Dalton Robertson Downs #21 Metz, #10 Thomas

Dalton Robertson's two upsets were good enough to earn the UNC Bear second place at heavyweight in the 2020 Southern Scuffle.

Robertson used his prolific top game to turn #21 Brandon Metz three times, enough for a 14-3 major decision in the semifinals. Trailing in the third period to #10 Demetrius Thomas, Robertson again used his top work to rack up four near-fall points and ice the match. Robertson was injured in his finals match against Iowa State's Gannon Gremmel, but hopefully he'll recover quickly and be back to action.

Wyatt Sheets Establishes Himself in Rankings With Two Upsets

Oklahoma State has been developing Wyatt Sheets as its 157-pounder for the last two seasons. He had a solid showing at last week's Southern Scuffle with wins over #20 Taleb Rahmani of Pitt and #18 Matt Zovistoski of App State.

The Cowboys have been looking for more productivity out of 157, and while Sheets has yet to put himself in the conversation to score significant points at this year's NCAA Championships, his Scuffle performance was a step in the right direction.

Milner Two Upsets for 4th-Place Finish at Scuffle

Sophomore Jonathan Milner of Appalachian State has steadily improved throughout his career. He was 11-8 as a true freshman, 21-9 last year, and currently sits at 19-4 and is looking like an NCAA qualifier for the Mountaineers.

He had a pair of ranked wins this weekend over Southern Conference rival #22 Tanner Smith of Chattanooga and #19 Requir Van der Merwe of Stanford and earned fourth place at the Southern Scuffle.

Milner was one of six placers for App State, and his performance helped lead his team to a ninth place finish overall.
