Because I am an American hero, I sifted through every single NCAA Division I roster to find the best names in the nation.

This is, of course, a largely subjective endeavor, and below the names I did try to explain some of my criteria. Along my nomenclatural journey, I also stumbled upon many other compelling nuggets: particularly competitive weight classes, certain teams with funny roster coincidences, and so on. I made a few notes if you're interested in extremely delightful bite-sized pieces of information.

If you disagree with me, that is awesome. I welcome that; I thrive on that. Feel free to complain to FloWrestling on Twitter or Instagram and name me, Hunter Sharpless, as the culprit.

Without further ado, here are the best names in NCAA DI wrestling:

Regarding criteria, I don't think there are really any surprises of what drew me to the individual names: It was a combination of look, sound, and uniqueness.

I did not make sure to locate the correct pronunciation for each name, so the way the name appears to sound may not be the way it actually sounds; I don't care. Sometimes the selection had to do with the combination of/relationship between first and last name (e.g. Wil Gil), and sometimes a single name was so damn awesome it didn't matter what the other name was (e.g. Gary Wokojance).

One difficulty I ran into, but which I didn't avoid, was the fact that, incredibly, some weight classes were way, way better than others; 184, for instance, had incredible depth, while 285 really wasn't that impressive to me. Nevertheless, I did try to make the teams stick to respective weight classes, and I think the product benefits from that discipline.

Here are some other notes and things:

  • Appalachian State has one guy named Barrett Blakely and another guy named Blake Baker. I thought that was kind of awesome.
  • I was not prepared for how many DI teams have sets of brothers on them. Drexel appears to have three sets.
  • Fresno State has two wrestlers named Isaiah Perez. They are in very different weight classes.
  • Some schools have links that you can click to hear the pronunciation of a certain name, but the links really didn't follow any sort of logic. Sometimes there was a link by a pretty obvious-sounding name, but then just a few names down there would be some impossible-to-pronounce name with no link by it. Terrible!
  • I was flexible with wrestlers listed at multiple weights, so I may have moved someone to a weight where they haven't wrestled as much if their school listed them at two weights.
  • 149 was extremely difficult as well, probably second to 184.
  • The main article photo is Nebraska's Zemua Baptista at the 2018 U23 World Team Trials.
  • I only worked with names that were listed on the school's website.
  • My favorite name in NCAA Division I wrestling is Wil Gil.
