In a recent article, NBC Sports reported a recommendation from the World Anti-Doping Agency that Russia be banned from the next two Olympic Games as it was at the Pyeongchang Games in 2018. Under that ban, approved Russian athletes were able to compete but could not officially represent Russia.

NBC Sports' OlympicTalk explained:

At the last Winter Games, the IOC banned Russia as a country but allowed 168 Russian athletes to compete under the banner “Olympic Athlete from Russia.” A similar arrangement could be made for Tokyo.

There is still some question as to how the ban will be implemented because of overlapping rulebooks, so we'll have to wait for further details on the next steps concerning Russia in Tokyo.

For wrestling fans, this potential ban raises questions about its impact on the Olympic Qualifying procedures. If Russian athletes are allowed to compete as neutrals as they were in 2018, then the logic suggests that Russian wrestlers would follow the normal qualifying process and simply compete as "Olympic Athletes from Russia" in Tokyo.

If a complete ban of Russian athletes goes into effect, it is unclear what would happen to the spots that Russia has already qualified for the Olympics. At the 2019 World Championships, Russia qualified 50kg for Women's Freestyle; 60kg, 67kg, and 97kg for Greco-Roman; and 57kg, 65kg, 74kg, 86kg, and 97kg for Men's Freestyle.

For now, we'll await further ruling on this potential ban. According to NBC Sports, "WADA's executive committee will consider the recommendations on Dec. 9."
