Here’s basically everything you need to know about the history of the rivalry:

  • Iowa leads the series 65-16-2

  • Iowa has won 15 straight, 30 of the last 31, and 54 of the last 58

  • Iowa State was 9-5-1 before Dan Gable took over as head coach of Iowa, was 5-36-1 during Gable, and is 2-24 since

  • They have wrestled every season since the 1972-73 season

  • In ‘76-’92, ‘96-’99, ‘00-’02 they wrestled at least twice. Five times the result changed in the second matchup of the season

  • They wrestled a remarkable four times in the ‘89-’90 season

  • In 1912 and 1913 the two teams wrestled, but they were officially ruled exhibitions. Iowa won both times, 4-0 and 2.5-1.5

  • Iowa’s longest win streak is 30 (Feb. 21, 1987, to Dec. 7, 2003)

  • Iowa State’s longest win streak is six (Feb. 10, 1917, to Feb. 27, 1936)

  • The only blowout occurred in 1933, when the Cyclones won 34-0

  • 2018 was the first time a dual was decided by one point

  • Current Iowa head coach Tom Brands is 14-0 as a coach against Iowa State

  • Since 2004, the rivalry has been referred to as the Cy-Hawk Series for all sports. In an extremely on-brand move from the state, the Iowa Corn Promotion Board and the Iowa Corn Growers Association started sponsoring the rivalry in 2011. It is now officially called the “Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series.”

  • The two schools introduced the Dan Gable Traveling Trophy in 2010
