Day 4 Bracket Breakdown | Complete Women's Preview

Greco Medal Matches

60kg Bronze

Lenur Temirov (UKR) vs Mirambek Ainagulov (KAZ). Last year's 63kg bronze in Temirov vs 2017 silver at 59kg in Ainagulov. The host nation would jump into third place with a win here. Temirov in red, and they are knee fighting hard as Ainagulov is a lefty lead. Whistle at the 4:56 mark. Ukraine put down at the 4:35 mark, Kazakhstan lines up left side. He tries to lift that side drops to a gut, then a lift, backstep into a 4 off the ide arch. He's going for break, lifting again. Ainagulov's corner challenging for a correct throw, would give him a 7-0 lead. They win the challenge, but a stepout instead of a correct throw. Two on one attempt for Temirov, whistle at 3:20. A 6-0 lead at the break for blue, the hosts looking for their third medal of the week. Front headlock, goes over the top with the pinch, 4 confirmed, and that's a bronze medal for Kazakhstan's Mirambek Ainagulov.

60kg Bronze

Elmurat Tasmuradov (UZB) vs Ali Reza Nejati (IRI). Rio bronze and last year's silver Tasmuradov vs Junior bronze Nejati. Four for Tasmuradov off the modified Herman attempt, and a challenge coming in from Iran. Tasmuradov never exposed, so it's 5-0 now less than a minute in. Arm throw attempt, Tasmuradov tries to hip over but Nejati covers for two. Back on their feet with 4:21 to go. Nejati holding center but unable to break through Tasmuradov's holds. They'll head into the break with it 5-2. Back to action and Tasmuradov gives up two on a failed headlock attempt, Iran pulls within one. Tasmuradov once again fails to hip over on a takedown attempt, Nejati takes the lead, then walks him over to the edge. Couldn't finish the throw but gets the stepout, leading 7-5. Final 30 seconds and Nejati is staying calm. Iran wins their second medal, and now second through fifth in the team standings are separated by just four points.

60kg Gold

Sergey Emelin (RUS) vs Kenichiro Fumita (JPN). Match between the 2018 world champ and 2017 world champ at 59kg. This match establishes the gold medal favorite heading into Tokyo as Fumita is guaranteed to represent Japan next year. Obvious statement, but getting on top first will be huge. Fumita is moving Emelin around the mat. Passive called at 4:35 against Fumita, who was shouldering Russia all around. Emelin lines up left side. Fumita doesn't go all the way over but they say he broke 90 degrees, then they give another gut as they head toward the edge. Japan showed challenge but waved it off, head and arm for 4 and Fumita is looking for a gut, switching sides to take the lead. Lift and back step for 4, and he just scored 10 points in about 20 seconds. Awesome first period, and they head into the break with Japan up 10-5. Emelin tries to lock a headlock but Fumita clears, and Japan is once again taking ground. Whistle at 2:17. Righty underhook from Emelin, whistle at 1:47. Russia looking frustrated here, final 30 seconds. Fumita wins his second gold.

77kg Bronze

Mohammadali Geraei (IRI) vs Karapet Chalyan (ARM). The Falcon is looking for his second career medal. Geraei's takedown is confirmed, thought it was white paddled. Two on one for Iran, Armenia trying to clear out. Sneaky arm throw and Chalyan takes the 4-2 lead. Body lock into a lat drop for Geraei and he takes a 6-4 lead, which is how it stays at the break. Duck attempt by Geraei pulled into front head by Chalyan, cleared out with a minute left. Scramble, Chalyan lands on top, he was leading on criteria but tried to throw, Geraei lands on top. Armenia challenges wanting a correct throw. 9-6 now after the lost challenge, 41 seconds left.

77kg Bronze

Jalgasbay Berdimuratov (UZB) vs Askhat Dilmukhamedov (KAZ). The winner of this match will be in second place as a team. Whistle 16 seconds in. Dilmukhamedov takes the lead and chants of ASK-HAT have been reigning all match. Back on their feet, 4:24 to go. Throw attempt, but no points. Berdimuratov gets on top, no points but leading on criteria now. He follows up with a takedown. It ends with Uzbekistan winning 3-1.

77kg Gold

Alex Kessidis (SWE) vs Tamas Lorincz (HUN). The Hungarian was also in the finals last year, the only repeat medalist from Budapest. A lot happened after the passive. Kessidis was put down at 4:30. He went for a chest wrap, which he scored. Then he remained on the reverse lift, and Kessidis put him on his back. After a conference the score was 5-0, which Sweden challenged. It is now 6-0 after the lost challenge, and Kessidis is down again. People are booing. Back to the reverse lift. He drives through and exposes. In his fourth final, the Hungarian finally gets his gold medal.

130kg Bronze

Heiki Nabi (EST) vs Amir Ghasemimonjezi (IRI). Nabi is a two-time world champ and 2012 Olympic silver. At the 4:30 mark, Ghasemi is put down. Back on their feet, Caution+2 confirmed against Ghasmi for stepping on the foot. Another Caution+2 against Ghasemi, this time for headbutting. A third Caution+2 is being challenged by Iran. That'll do it, Nabi wins his sixth medal.

130kg Bronze

Iakobi Kajaia (GEO) vs Eduard Popp (GER). The German wrestled for bronze last year, at the 2016 Olympics, and at worlds in 2014. He won Junior world bronze in 2010, while Kajaia won JR bronze in 2012. The Georgian was runner-up at both the Euro Games and European championships this year. Popp goes down at the 4:39 mark. Popp floats his hips as Kajaia switches sides on the gut, no points and back on their feet. 1-0 entering the second. Kajaia gets to front head and finally finishes the takedown. Caution+2 confirmed on the leg foul, 2:09 to go. Brought back up 20 seconds later but the Georgian leads 5-0 now. That's the first world medal for Kajaia at the senior level. The focus will be on Mijain Lopez and Kayaalp in Tokyo, but he should be in the mix for bronze.

130kg Gold

Oscar Pino Hinds (CUB) vs Riza Kayaalp (TUR). In my mind, Kayaalp is the third-best Greco heavyweight of all-time. This will be his 10th career medal, and would be his fourth career gold. Interestingly, two of them came in the year before the Olympics (2011 and 2015). We probably won't get to see Pino Hinds next year because of Lopez, but he did his job and qualified Cuba for Tokyo. Although he is a backup, Pino Hinds is the only wrestler at this weight to medal every worlds this quad. Kayaalp on top, righty gut stopped twice. Pino Hinds nearly forces a stepout, but Kayaalp circles and catches him for the go behind, up 3-0 at the break. Kayaalp goes down, two minutes left. That makes four for the Turk. Greco is now complete, and countries will set their lineups for the continental qualifiers next year.

Vuc tries a headlock over a minute in, Islamova catches it, pauses, and goes right into two guts to take a 6-0 lead. The home crowd starting to get into it now. No other action and Kazakhstan is halfway to their second world finalist of the week. Arm spin attempt by Vuc, called a slip. Vuc finally getting her headlock, now trails 6-2. Another takedown and Vuc trails by two with a little over a minute to go. Vuc in on the left leg, hard whizzer from Islamova. Vuc finishes the single and is now leading on criteria! Vuc holds on to win.

50kg: Yanan Sun (CHN) vs Mariya Stadnik (AZE)

Yanan throwing underhooks early. Stadnik shoots her out to take a 1-0 lead just 32 seconds in. Passive against Yanan, 4:20 left. The energy Yanan had against Irie is not there, and she goes on the clock near the end of the first. It's a 2-0 lead at the break for the Azeri world champ. Stadnik with her first takedown but unable to get a turn. Under two minutes left, Yanan needs a big move. Crotch lock and Yanan gets a four, but Stadnik immediately reverses her to preserve her lead. Yanan only needs one now though. Restart with 20 to go. Stadnik runs her to the edge and wins 6-4, Japan is out.

53kg: Mayu Mukaida (JPN) vs Maria Prevolarakari (GRE)

USA is rooting for Japan here. Snap go behind for Mukaida, but can't get her gut. Another takedown but no gut. Sarah Hildebandt is pulled back in and will have the winner of Yuliia Blahinya (UKR) and Vinesh Phogat (IND) tomorrow in repechage.

53kg: Yong Mi Pak (PRK) vs Qianyu Pang (CHN)

Shot by Pang, fought off by Pak. Now Pang in on a single and finishes it for two. Pak shoots, having trouble finishing, and blown dead just before the break. Passive offered and confirmed against Pak, 2:07left. Swing single by Pak to Pang's right leg, took a little but finished and into a lace, 8-2 and plenty of room. She's gonna finish it off and put North Korea in the finals.

55kg: Marinda Sedneva (KAZ) vs Nanami Irie (JPN)

Two on one, but Irie shoots low single and finishes, looking for a backbow now. Irie had Sedneva on her back, but bac on their feet, 4-0. Another takedown for Irie, 6-0 at the break. Irie runs through her, 8-0 now. Sedneva has no answer for Irie's pace, and Japan has two in the finals.

55kg: Jacarra Winchester (USA) vs Bediha Gun (TUR)

Jacarra shoots right away, but stopped by Turkey. Tapping the head and looking for shots. Jacarra shoots again but stonewalled, only a matter of time till one of those shot finishes. Gun on the clock now. Right before the clock expires, Gun rolls through and Jacarra comes out on top, making it 2-1. Apparently it wasn't one, not sure how. Jacarra in short offense and blown dead. Finally gets to a hi c and finishes on her back, 2-2 at the break. Snap into a shot, drives her out but lands on top and that's a big takedown for Winchester. Gun finally shoots, lefty into the armpit, lifts and pushes her out, 4-3 now. Attention Gun, grabbing the fingers. Another single, this time Jacarra squares up, gets to short O, now into a hi c, lifts and takes a second but finishes to go up 6-3, 39 seconds remaining. Gun forcing her to the edge, circling back in. Blown dead at 13, Caution+1 at 8.2 seconds, but she's in the finals!!!

72kg: Zhamila Bakberganova (KAZ) vs Natalia Vorobeva (RUS)

Chants of KAZ-AKH-STAN to start the match. Shot by Russia, no go, but KAZ gets hit for passive. Vorobeva wanted a big move, settles for the takedown. Another gut and it's 4-0, 4:32 left. The RU-SS-IA chants getting drowned out by the KAZ-AKH-STAN chants, plus the hosts have a drum. Vorobeva's two one one is frustrating Bakberganova. KAZ on the clock now. Double to her back, Russia leading 9-0 now. Bakberganova in on the shot, but the Olympic hits a nasty chin whip for 4 to close it out.

72kg: Paliha Paliha (CHN) vs Alina Stadnik (UKR)

Team USA is pulling for Ukraine in this one. Passive against China at 5:02. China on the clock 35 seconds later. Stadnik with the 1-0 lead after the shot clock. That's how it stays at the break. Immediate takedown and gut by Stadnik to lead 5-0, just kidding they white paddled the gut which was then challenged. Ukraine wins the challenge and it's 5-0, a minute left. That'll do it, after a late throw attempt, Stadnik wins 7-0 and pulls Victoria Francis back in.

Preliminary Rounds

Before we get to the women, there will be some repechage matches in Greco. Rio bronze Elmurat Tasmuradov (UZB) gets a forfeit and is one match away from qualifying for Tokyo. He will have to beat last year's world silver in Victor Ciobanu (MDA) to do so.

Winning his first repechage match 9-0 was two-time world champ Heiki Nabi (EST), an Olympian in 2016 who also won silver in London. He will have to beat Murat Ramonov (KGZ) to qualify.

Starting off with a crucial one at 53kg between Vinesh Phogat (IND) and Sofia Mattsson (SWE). Phogat with the immediate takedown but no turn. She goes short offense to drag for another takedown and leads 4-0. Holding center now as Mattsson tries to handfight but Phogat gets under here for a double and leads 6-0 now less than two minutes in. Butt drag and she is on the verge of teching the seven-time world/Olympic medalist. Vinesh finishes it off with a four and will have Mayu Mukaida of Japan next.

Important one looking forward as Yasmani Acosta Fernandez (CHI) wins, putting him in position to qualify if he can beat Iakobi Kajaia (GEO). All of the bouts to determine Olympic spots have been finalized, but until those happen it's all women.

Match 1 - Whitney Conder vs Son Hyang KIM (PRK)

First Period: Conder holding center and keeping her hands on the mat. Both look hesitant to shoot but Conder jab steps a couple of times. Low single for North Korea and it's 2-0 now. Conder trying to pull her into front head. Kim being very patient, not forcing anything. Another takedown for Kim off a low blast double, and it's 4-0 with 3:26 left. North Korea catches Whitney's shot, and they go into short offense to end the period.

Second Period: Conder first back to the center. She's having trouble getting to her offense, looks hesitant to drive through on her shots. Passive against Kim at the 2:02 mark. Back into front head, blown dead at 1:49. Conder swing single, but Kim gets behind, drops to a leg, lifts, and gets four as she tree tops her. USA is challenging, which they won to make it 6-0. Under a minute now and Conder continues shooting but can't get through Kim's arms. Restart with 43 to go and another shot caught. Conder falls 6-0 and will have a difficult time getting pulled back in.

No upsets so far at 50kg. Four seed Evin Demirhan (TUR) won 6-1 over Brazil. Yuki Irie (JPN), who took out two-time defending world champ Yui Susaki to make the team, made short work of her opponent. 2017 world silver Emilia Vuc wins 4-2 over Germany.

Match 2 - Victoria Francis vs Dejah Slater (CAN)

First Period: Francis in her second world championships appearance. As expected she comes out handfighting. She digs an underhook and goes to her snatch single, walks her out for a 1-0 lead. Classic Francis here. Short offense, go behind, runs a bar and now leads 5-0. Slater is on her back but no pin call yet. Readjusting to a headlock now and she gets the fall! She is now in the quarters against Ukraine.

Back to repechage, and Romania is facing Ukraine for a 60kg Olympic spot on Mat C. On A is Nabi vs Ramonov at 130kg. Razvan Arnaut wins the flurry and goes up 2-0. Nabi on top with 4:42 left. Ramonov gets Nabi put down to make it 3-1, but can't turn him.

Potentially massive win for the team race as Natalia Vorobieva (RUS) takes out six-time age level world champ Masako Furuichi (JPN). The world and Olympic champ Vorobieva survived a late comeback to hold on 6-4. Now on C India vs Japan at 53kg. Mukaida with a dirty duck into two guts, 7-0 after also picking up a shotclock point a little earlier. Mukaida goes on to win and will have Hildebrandt next.

Gerari (IRI) vs Cataraga (MDA) at 77kg in repechage to qualify for the Olympics. Geraei gets put down but comes out from bottom. Cataraga up 5-0 at the break after a throw. Geraei forces a stepout to make it 5-1. Big 4 for Iran and he leads now! 1:44 to go.

Match 3 - Sarah Hildebrandt vs Thi Dao Bui (VIE)

First Period: In the red is world silver Hildebrandt. She goes into short offense, trying to come around behind. Had a cradle but lost it, however, she falls into a lace and that'll do it, 10-0 in just 1:14 to make the quarters. She'll have Mukaida (JPN) next, the two-time world champ coming down from 55kg.

Y. Sun (CHN) vs. S.Kim (PRK)

First Period: This is to keep Conder alive. Sun scores quickly. She has a win over 2x WC Susaki (JPN) this season. Pace slows and there's not much more than hand grabbing until the break. Very cautious wrestling by both.

Second Period: A shot by Kim scores but Sun counters and gets exposure. It's 4-2 Sun and the clock is getting eaten up. Several attacks by Kim. She's in deep! 5 seconds to go! She can't convert with a leg shelved. Time expires. They will review it. Challenge is lost. Sun moves on. Conder is eliminated.

First Period: Jacarra fights off a shot with a whizzer and finishes behind. Uchi mata to make it 6-0, with a turn. Short drag and Jacarra gets a tech in 1:06

Repechage before the quarterfinals get started. Very important for Team USA as 2017 bronze Yasmani Acosta Fernandez of Chile takes on Iakobi Kajaia (GEO). Acosta goes down at the 4:50 mark. No turn, back on their feet at 4:22. On Mat D, Olympic bronze Tasmuradov (UZB) vs world silvwer Ciobanu (MDA) at 60kg. Tasmuradov takes the lead at 4:38, and gut wrench to make it 3-0. He struggled for it but 5-0 now, and into two front headlocks and Tasmuradov gets it done. Acosta takes the lead on criteria at 2:17. Passive against Acosta and he leads 2-1 now with 53 seconds left, but Chile is challenging the passive. Waved off. Georgia wins.

Match 5 - Victoria Francis vs Alina Stadnik Makhyna (UKR)

First Period: Starting off the quarterfinals for USA is Victoria Francis. She has the 2013 world champ. Stadnik gets hit for passive twice, on the clock at 4:31. She headlocks Francis, who fights out of it but trails 4-0 at the break.

Second Period: Francis hanging on the head, looking for a score off short offense. 90 seconds left and still having some trouble generating offense. Blown dead with 39 left, still not score for America. Last-ditch effort falls short, and loses 4-0.

Match 7 - Jacarra Winchester vs Bolortuya Bat Ochir (MGL)

First Period: Jacarra with the slick ankle pick to take a 2-0 lead. She drives her out on another shot to make 3-0. Failed shot attempt for Bat Ochir and Jacarra makes her pay, 5-0 with 3:19 left. Bat Ochir missteps again, and Jacarra blows through on an ankle pick so hard she gets 4, leads 9-0 at the break.

Second Period: Headlock for 2 for Mongolia, but Jacarra rebounds, gets a 4 and finishes it off with a tech.
