The middle of July means the end of the domestic freestyle season, as well as the close of a high school graduating cycle. The goal at Fargo next week is the same for everyone: a Cadet or Junior national championship.
July 13-19 | 9AM Central
Going into Fargo week, I wanted to take a look back at the finals in recent history and breakdown some of the numbers. Only a handful of wrestlers are lucky enough to wrestle on the main stage at some point in their career.
I threw the finalists from the last two years into some spreadsheets and took the liberty of highlighting some of the stand out numbers and patterns for you guys to check out. Below are the Cadet and Junior Finals spreadsheets, along with a little state breakdown of Fargo Champs and Finalists. Have fun with the spread sheet madness below and watch this weekend for mat madness in Fargo.

Champ Champs
Ever since Conor McGregor became a two-division UFC Champion and donned himself “Champ Champ”, it has been the new trend in combat sports to be try and win two titles simultaneously. But wrestlers have been doubling up on titles out in Fargo, winning both Freestyle and Greco, way before all of that. Let’s see what guys have earned Champ Champ status in the past couple years.
- Anthony Cassioppi, IL: 2017 & 2018 (Junior)
- Mason Manville, MN: 2017 & 2018 (Cadet)
- Braxton Amos, WV: 2016 & 2017 (Cadet)
- Jacob Warner, IL: 2017 (Junior)
- Dylan Ragusin, IL: 2017 (Cadet)
- Carter Starocci, PA: 2017 (Cadet)
- Ashton Sharp, MO: 2017 (Cadet)
- Lucas Davison, IN: 2018 (Junior)
- Mason Gehloff, MN: 2018 (Cadet)
Road to Redemption
One of the hardest losses for a wrestler to take is one in the finals. That’s why it’s that much more impressive when someone can lose in the Fargo Finals, and come back and win it the next year I.E. Dominic Serrano losing in the 120lb. Finals in '17 and then winning the 126lb title in '18. Here’s a list of guys in this years field who are on the road to redeeming themselves with a stop sign.
- #1 Dustin Plott, OK (Junior 182)
- #9 Caleb Rathjen, IA (Junior 132)
- #9 Kolby Franklin, PA (16U 220)
- #10 Mick Burnett, OH (Junior 132)
- #15 Ryan Franco, CA (Junior 132)
- #18 John Martin Best, WV (Junior 160)
- #19 Luke Geog, OH (Junior 145)
- #19 Jore Volk, MN (Cadet 100)
- Yusief Lillie, WA (Junior 113)
- Manuel Rojas, MI (16U 152)
State Dominance
I don’t think it's any surprise to say that Illinois kills it out in Fargo. But when you look at the numbers and see that they not only have the most champs but have more than double the second place states, you understand just how dominant they have been in recent history.
