Sammy Alvarez is transferring from NC State to Rutgers. He will be eligible to compete immediately for the Scarlet Knights.

Alvarez committed to the Wolfpack back in January of 2018. A New Jersey native, he made the state finals each of his final three seasons before finally winning a title this past March by knocking off Penn State commit Robert Howard in the finals.

A graduate of St. Joseph Regional, Alvarez was part of NC State's #17 ranked recruiting class. Included in that class was Kai Orine of Missouri, who projects as a 125 or 133, the same weights Alvarez at which was projected. Also coming to Raleigh next year is Ryan Jack, who currently is also projected to be a lightweight.

After winning his state title this year over Howard, a teammate of his at Bitetto Trained Wrestling Club, he finished his career as the #3 ranked 126 pounder. The final 2019 Big Board had him rated as the 34th best prospect from this high school class that just graduated.

Shane Metzler was Rutgers' starter for 17 of their 18 duals as well as their representative at Big Tens, but did not qualify for the national tournament. His primary competition for the spot this year was going to be redshirt freshman Nic Aguilar, a three-time California finalist and 2018 state champ. Aguilar was 7-7 last year and 1-5 against NCAA qualifiers.
