The post on social media indicates he will not be competing this summer to allow himself the opportunity to remain healthy for a run at the 2020 Olympic Team.
To close out the letter, Taylor said the following:
Best of luck to the athletes competing in Final X this June. Downey, shoot your shot. Moments like this don't get gifted to you often.
The reigning world champ confirmed he had surgery on his knee following the injury he suffered at Beat the Streets: Grapple at the Garden on May 6.
Pat Downey will be the 86kg world team rep for America at the world championships, which are September 14-22 in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan. This is based off provision 7e in the world team trials qualifications and procedures.
Here is Downey's tweet in response to the news:
my dream has just became reality. all i can say is i did not want to earn it in this fashion. injury is the most terrible part of combative athletics. i wanna wish @magicman_psu a speedy & ?% recovery. time to represent @USAWrestling in Kazakhstan & become the 86kg #WorldChamp?
