The wait is over. The weigh-ins are over. The brackets are set. We have found our assigned logging station and have nestled in for an incredible day of wrestling.

Less than an hour to go before we start the party!

We're doing 10 pigtail matches to get us down to 32 on the championship side in each weight class. Then 16 championship matches. No consolation round matches until the evening session.

Go time!

The NCAAs haven't been to Pittsburgh since 1957. There are a lot of wrestling fans in the area that have been waiting for this one, and they are still coming in as wrestling gets underway. There/s no way this won't be a packed house by mid-session.

Pigtails

Joe Smith gets the first takedown against Tyler Morland. They just started seeding every wrestler in the bracket but we're going to assume that Smith will be the only two-time All-American to receive a #33 seed for a while. Smith wins comfortably 10-5. He will wrestle Alex Marinelli in an absolutley insane first round bout.

Malik Amine has Tanner Smith in a cradle, but time will expire in the first before he can get the fall.

Devin Kane scores 2 points for UNC has he pins Jake Covaciu of Indiana.

Ben Anderson of the Duke Finsilvers gets a pinfall while trailing in the match. He will join the four other Duke wrestlers (all Finesilver brothers) in the round of 32.

Jacob Aven of Purdue, the lightest heavyweight in the field, was an alternate, and only made the tournament when Jake Gunning pulled out. He has Brandon Ngati of WVU.

First Round

125

Arujau and Heinselman in a very good first round bout. Heinselman is one of the Cozy Boys, Ohio State's famed freshman class.

Princeton true freshman Pat Glory pouring it on Alonzo Allen. He takes a 14-0 lead into the second period.

Rayvon Foley of Michigan State taking it to the very tough Rico Montoya of Northern Colorado. Montoya is also the only qualifier who hails from the state of New Mexico.

All eyes on mat 2 as Spencer Lee gets his first match of the tournament. Lee cruises to a tech fall and will have Sean Fausz in a dynamite second round match.

Zeke Moisey trying to get revenge on Elijah Oliver after getting pinned by the Hoosier at Big Tens. Both Moisey and Oliver are seniors. It's Oliver by points, sending former NCAA runnerup to the consolations.

A pin by Nick Piccininni gives the Cowboys two big bonus points. Their chances of catching Penn State are still exceedingly slim, but a second place trophy is very much in play.

All 125 1st rounds are in the books except for Rivera, who has Chalifoux, winner of the pigtails, which will wrestle later.

#1 seed Rivera finally gets on the mat

Nick Suriano has Dylan Duncan in the first round and scores a quick first takedown. Suriano races to an 11-2 lead.

Phillippi and Gomez wrestling their respective first round bouts. A win from both of them would set up one of the most anticipated second round matches. The hometown hero Phillippi advances, ad does

Last year's third placer Tariq Wilson taking on Noah 'Gone Baby' Gonser. Tariq got the first takedown but now Gonser is on top in the second where he is most dangerous

DJ Fehlman gets a big turn on Chas Tucker for crucial nearfall points. Fehlman leads 6-2 going into the third with RT over a minute. Fehlman holds on for the 7-2 victory.

RBY and DeSanto wrestling simultaneously as two of the biggest fan bases in the arena cheer on their guys. DeSanto wins by stalling out Codi Russell in the first period. That may be the most DeSanto match ever. RBY with a 4-2 lead over Mario Guillen. RBY wins 8-2, regular decision. There are a lot of Penn State fans in the PPG Paints Arena and they all applaud.

Stevan Micic leading 7-3 over Mason Pengilly. Micic advances.

Dom Demas and Mitch Moore kick off the 141 pounders with big upper body attempts, unsurprisingly. No Scores yet. Demas going feet to back with inside trips to jump out to a 10-3 lead.

Chad Red with a huge pin over Ian Parker. Red is coming into this tournament with a lot of momentum after an excellent Big Ten tournament for the Husker.

Mitch McKee with a pinfall as he continues here he left off after a solid Big Ten tournament in Minneapolis.

True freshman Anthony Artalona of Penn will try and solve All-American senior Tommy Thorn of Minnesota. Artalona appeared to get the go-ahead takedown with 10 seconds left but Thorn kept working and scored a reversal with just a few seconds to spare. Thorn advances and Artalona drops to the consolation round after a heartbreaker.

Penn State's Brady Berge has a tough early test against Fresno State's Khristian Olivas. Berge begins to take charge in the second. It's 5-2 Berge as we go to the third.

Jerrett Degen is got Russell Rohlfing frustrated, winning by ten in the third.

True frosh phenom Brock Mauller opens up against Matt Zovistoski for a major decision and advances.

Kaden Gefeller of Oklahoma State has Ryan Blees, formerly of Oklahoma State, now of Virginia Tech. This one goes to sudden victory, and it's Blees with the takedown and an upset over the #7 seed. Big blow to Oklahoma State's team point total, although G could still go ultimate roadwarrior and place third.

#2 seed Micah Jordan gets the fall in close proximity to the Ohio State section, much to their collective delight.

Looking for an upset is SDSU's Henry Pohlmeyer, he's got Josh Heil on his back. But the Campbell Camel fights off his back, slaps on a front headlock and cement jobs Pohlmeyer to his back to collect the pinfall in a wild finish.

The scrappy Jared Prince of Navy is in a crazy 7-7 nail biter with All-American Max Thomsen in the third. Make that a 9-8 victory by Thomsen in a very entertaining first round match.

Requir van der Merwe of Stanford by way of South Africa in tiebreakers with Cole Martin of Wisconsin, the first match to go past sudden victory and the last match of the weight class. We go to sudden victory 2 and Cole Martin gets the match winning takedown to advance.

Jason Nolf ushers in the 157 pound weight class with a cradle and a pin. Nolf elicits the loudest cheer from the arena yet.

In a battle of true frosh phenoms, Josh Humphrey of Lehigh by way of West Virginia beat Justin Ruffin of SIUE by way of Georgia.

Sorry about the lack of updates on this weight, got consumed by the Joe Smith Alex Marinelli 165-pound bout.

165

In perhaps the most star-powered first round match in NCAA history, Joe Smith and Alex Marinelli square off on mat 2. Smith gets the first takedown right in front of the Oklahoma State section, which I believe is 105. Marinelli escapes to cut the deficit in helf. The Bull is in on a leg, but Smith counters, he scores another takedown! It's 4-1, now 4-2 after the escape. We go to the second. Marinelli starts in the top position. Marinelli riding mostly parallel but Smith isn't doing much to get out. There's the first stall warning on Smith. Marinelli over a minute of RT. Now Marinelli gets his for stalling as he hasn't come out to the side yet. Time expires, it's still 4-2. We go to the third, Marinelli takes down. He has 1:22 of riding time. Marinelli escapes in about 5 seconds, its 4-3 Smith but Marinelli has RT at 1:18. Marinelli drops to a single, he picks it up and has Smith hopping. Alex runs the pike and drops Joesph to his butt. Marinelli covers for two and the 5-4 lead. Riding time now locked up with 30 seconds left in regulation. A stall point and a RT point makes it a 7-4 decision for Iowa's Alex Marinelli. Joe Smith won the takedown battle but he drops to the consolation round nonetheless.

That match was worth the price of admission.

Returning third-place finisher Evan Wick has begun his second NCAA tournament. WIck cruises to the next round with a major decision.

In the Bryce Bowl, Bryce Steiert of UNI pins Bryce Martin of Indiana in the first period.

Also pinfalling his way to the second period is Mekhi Lewis of Virginia Tech.

Vincenzo Joseph looking for the fall on mat 2 while his teammate Mark Hall does the same on mat 8. No fall immediately for either wrestler but I believe Cenzo just now pinned Evan DeLong in a tilt.

UPDATE: Cenzo pinned with a tilt.

Gordon Wolf falls to Connor Flynn 5-4. Because they do not score double digits like a bet they would in the 165-pound preview, I am now forced to eat a corner rug :(

We've fully rounded the halfway mark. #5 seed Jordan Kutler of Lehigh is well on his way to advancing to the second round. He leads Jacob Oliver lead in the third.

Defending champ Zahid Valencia begins his title defense against Dean Sherry of Rider. Valencia strolls to the next round after an 11-3 victory.

Cornell's Brandon Womack will try to reclaim All-American status this season. He leads the Virginia Military Institute's Neal Richards 7-4 after two periods. Richards battled back to make it 10-10 and force sudden victory. Womack survives 11-10 in tiebreakers.

Daniel Bullard of NCSU and Mikey Labriola of Nebraska are knotted up 3-3 after 3 minutes of wrestling. Labriola will prevail, winning 7-5.

Kimball Bastian gets a Utah Valley Wolverine into the second round after he beat Ethan Smith 6-4.

In an upset, Ben Harvey of Army takes out Dylan Lydy of Purdue 8-3 with a smothering top game. These two wrestled in an Indiana state high school final, that I believe I heard the PA announcer (either the excellent Bryan Hazard or the redoubtable Jasob Bryant, I can't remember which) say Lydy won in overtime. So a little revenge served cold for Harvey.

184

The consensus #1 Myles Martin will begin his senior season title quest against Bob Coleman of Oregon State. MyMar gets the pinfall and advances to the next round.

Lehigh's Ryan Preisch will have a difficult first test against Max Lyon of Purdue. Preisch gets it done 6-1.

Emery Parker will likewise have a tough test against Will Schany. Should probably just assume all the 184 matches will be tough, as it is a very deep weight class.

Max Dean begins his march to what he hopes is his second trip to the podium against Noah Stewart of Army. The Cornellian is up big early and will likely make it at least to the second round easily.

Cash Wilcke of Iowa and Nick Gravina of Rutgers are in a thriller. It's 3-2 Wilcke with 24 seconds left in the third but the RU corner wants a review to see if Gravina had a takedown. Both of these Big Ten rivals have made it to the round of 12 before. Twice for Wicke (up at 197) and once for Gravina (also at 184). The no takedown is confirmed and Wilcke holds on to advance to the second round in a hard fought bout.

Binghamton freshman Lou DePrez dominating Wisconsin's Mason Reinhardt 9-0 in the second.

Hometown hero Nino Bonaccorsi, a freshman at the host Pittsburgh University, beat Will Sumner of Utah Valley.

Nick Reenan Dakota Geer is a high quality first round matchup. It's 0-0 after 3 minutes. Geer has a 5-0 lead in the third over the Final X participant. Geer scores the 6-0 upset, although his seed was hurt by the fact that he spent much of the year up at 197 pounds filling in for an injured Preston Weigel.

Bo Nickal starts his quest for four-straight finals appearances and his fourth championship against pigtail winner, Bo Nickal. Laird is in trouble early, and falls into a 8-1 hole in the first. The next pinning combo does the trick, and the Bo Nickal bonus train has officially left the station.

Jake Jakobsen trying to reverse a 5-1 defeat he suffered at the hands of Ben Honis in the quarterfinals of the EIWAs. Jackobsen 7-3 in the third thanks to some crucial back points in the second. Honis scores a takedown and then lets Jakobsen up to make it 8-5, but kills a lot of clock in a scramble in his next attack. Jakobsen has a 3 point lead with 17 seconds to go. Jakobsen with the upset in front of a very happy Brown and White section of the arena right next to the mat.

Tom Lane of Cal Poly has an upset on his mind. He's leading Army's Rocco Caywood 4-3 late in the third with riding time locked up. Now Caywood take injury time. That'll make it tough to come back, as Lane will get choice of pisition on the restart. They go neutral, and Lane gets the takedown to ice it. Lane knocks off the #12 seed and the Mustangs have a wrestler in the 2nd round.

Jake Woodley beat Randall Diabe via criteria. They both had the same number of points at the end of the match, but they awarded Woodley the win after 2 sudden victory and tiebreaker periods because Woodley had more riding time, which is how criteria is decided in college wrestling.

Again, that was a win via criteria in an NCAA wrestling match.

The Cowboy Bulk Job, Derek White, is leading pigtail winner Brandon Ngati of West Virginia 5-0 at the start of the third.

Mason Parris is up 2-1 on Sam Stoll in the first period. Parris go the first takedown but Stoll is starting to overpower Parris. Stoll has been moving Parris around and Parris gets dinged for walking out of bounds. That was his second and that ties the score. Stoll controls the ties and shoves Parris out of bounds and again Parris is hit for stalling. It's 3-2 Stoll going into the second. Escape for Stoll makes it 4-2. Now it's a stall on Stoll for pushing the action out of bounds, that makes it 4-3. Another stall for fleeing on Parris makes it 5-3. That's Parris' fourth. One more and he's DQ'd. A takedown for Stoll makes it 7-3. We go to the third. Stoll holds one to win 8-5 and knocks off the #5 seed, true freshman Mason Parris.

Singeltary and Jensen in a tight 0-0 Big Ten matchup but Singletary about to get a second period ride out. He gets it, and now Jensen is trying to return the favor in the third. Singletary reverses Jensen and holds on to win in a big match for the Buckeyes.

Gable Steveson avoiding the true frosh cruse (look for an article by Nomad on the topic shortly) and is demolishing Zack Parker 14-2 after one period. Steveson wins 18-3.

Also avoiding an early trip to the consolation round is true freshman Zack Elam, who had a tougher time than Steveson did in his match. Elam beat Matt Voss of George Mason 3-1 in sudden victory.

Anthony Cassar pins Antonio Pelusi of the Diplomats of Franklin & Marshall, which gets a roar from the Penn State fans here in the PPG.

And the Doug Vollaro Last Match of the Session Award goes to Thomas Haines and Billy Miller. But they had less than a minute in that bout and it's Haines in a romp. The Lock Haven Bald Eagle beats his old EWL, now ACC foe, 14-3.
