In MMA circles, winning two belts like Daniel Cormier makes you the champ-champ. After winning Who's #1 and Super 32, Richard Figueroa II is now the only champ-champ in high school wrestling.

When you're the clear #1 at two weight classes, you can expect a little fanfare for your recruitment, even if you're only a sophomore. Whether you have him ranked first at 106 or 113, make sure you now put "Arizona State" next to Richie Figs' name, who announced his commitment on FloWrestling Radio Live.

His verbal to be in Tempe after high school comes not terribly into the process, but he has long been a fan of the Sun Devils. As a member of the Sunkist Kids/Monster Garage, Firgueroa grew up following the Valencias and Cade Olivas. His early commitment makes him just the second member of his grade to make their college decision.

Figs came into high school with quite a bit of hype, and backed that up by beating the defending California state champ at his weight before ever wrestling a varsity match. He finished his freshman year with a 48-2 record and his first CIF title, and would go on to avenge both of those losses last month.

It's no surprise that Richie is the #3 overall recruit in the Class of 2021. His resume is already sterling: Cadet world silver medalist, Super 32 titleist, FloNationals champion, Ironman and Fargo placer. The Akron run at 48kg gave him the #1 spot at 106, and then his wins over Jacob Decatur at WNO and Greg Diakomihalis in the 113lb S32 finals meant he was now top dog at both weights.

Although Figueroa has not yet begun his second varsity season at Selma high school, he is a mature, composed young man who hopes to become a leader in the Sun Devils program and bring other high level recruits to Tempe. His commitment to Arizona State comes after attending several duals and a prospect camp.

All the major players are expected to continue after Figueroa as he still has the ability to take official visits starting September 1st of next year. We currently have him rated as the second best prospect at 125lbs, and any powerhouse in need of a lightweight might try to lure him from ASU.

With their acclaimed 2015 recruiting class coming off the books in the next few years, the Sun Devil coaching staff has put together an excellent 2019 class. Figs verbal could be an early catalyst to jumpstart their 2020 and 2021 classes as well.
