Cadet world champ Matt Ramos (Lockport Township, IL) announced his college decision on social media today.

Ramos becomes the first 2019 commit for Minnesota after an excellent 2018 class. He chose the Gophers over Indiana.

After winning Akron and then a world title at 51kg, Ramos was #1 at 113. However, he has since moved up to 120 and is currently ranked 6th.

He also jumped up a few spots in the prospect rankings, where he went from #20 to #15 at 125. Which means either the coaches feel Patrick McKee grows out of 125, or they feel Ramos grows into a 133 after high school.

On the just updated 2019 Big Board, the rising senior comes in at #58. That puts him as the sixth best prospect from Illinois. Meanwhile, McKee was 38th overall on the 2018 Big Board.

On his decision to attend Minnesota, Ramos told FloWrestling the following:

I’m excited to join the Gopher family because I thought this would be the best place to grow for me as an athlete and as a person. My future coaches and teammates are hardworking and of great character.

As a sophomore, Ramos finished fifth in the Illinois 3A state tournament at 106, and then took third this past season at 113 as a junior. Prior to winning Akron this year, he finished fourth and second in Cadet freestyle in Fargo.
