It’s the first boys high school freestyle match to ever go down at Who’s #1. We’ve seen #1 Julian Ramirez and #2 Carson Kharchla square off in folkstyle, so why not see what happens in freestyle?

At Ironman last year Ramirez edged Kharchla in overtime 4-3 in the consolation semifinals. Now they will meet for the #1 spot. However, they both earned a spot at this year’s WNO in different ways.

#1 Julian Ramirez

  • 2016 Fargo Runner-up
  • National Prep Champ
  • Cornell commit

Ramirez, who is making his second straight appearance in the Snakepit, has the overall resume that solidifies him as the top dog here. He’s gone head-to-head with the best guys, and despite coming up on the short end against guys that have since moved on to the next level, his body of work still warrants the invite and it’s irrefutable.

#2 Carson Kharchla

  • 2018 Fargo Champ
  • Ohio State Champ
  • Ironman placer

Call it an emergence. Kharchla is just tough, and that completely showed as he dismantled the field this year in Fargo. His gut wrench viciously tore up every guy he was up against. It was clear that he is on the rise and deserves the shot against Ramirez after he finished his title run that included taking out Oklahoma State commit Travis Wittlake and Dustin Plott, who held the #1 ranking coming into the tournament.

How do they match up….in freestyle?

As we saw in folkstyle it’s a low scoring match where both guys are a bit tentative. However, their styles in freestyle are a lot more open. Kharchla has an A+ gut wrench. Ramirez has the leg attacks and a lot of em too. This is going to be a great match and I’m expecting some big points.
