Sage Mortimer of Utah had quite the impressive week at Fargo. Mortimer, who will be a sophomore at the American Leadership Academy in Spanish Fork, Utah, wrestled in three separate tournaments at the 2018 USAW Cadet and Junior National Championships, earning three All-American honors, making the finals twice, and winning a coveted stop sign in the cadet women's 100lb division.

100lb Cadet Women's

Mortimer came up just short of being one of the select few double women's Fargo champs. She did, however, run through the Cadet 100lb weight class, winning five straight matches in dominant fashion, ending them all before the first period.

RESULTS:

Round of 32 - Sage Mortimer, UT pins Kaycie Tanimoto, HI 0:39

Round of 16 - Sage Mortimer, UT pins Mikayla Guevarra, CA 2:45

Quarterfinals - Sage Mortimer, UT techs Rayana Sahagun, MI 14-2

Semifinals - Sage Mortimer, UT pins Grace Gundrum, PA 1:30

Finals - Sage Mortimer, UT techs Alejandra Corral, HI 14-4

100lb Junior Women's

Mortimer's run in the junior division was nearly as impressive. Weighing in once again at 100lb, Mortimer mowed down the competition, ending every match early until she reached the finals. There, Mortimer would be stopped by one of the biggest favorites at the event, the five-time Fargo champ and recent gold medal winner at the UWW Cadet World Championships, Emily Shilson.

Despite the setback to Shilson, a 10-1 record in 11 women's matches at Fargo put Mortimer in rarified air.

RESULTS:

Round of 64 - Sage Mortimer, UT techs Lili Alderson, WI 10-0

Round of 32 - Sage Mortimer, UT techs Tianna Fernandez, HI 13-2

Round of 16 - Sage Mortimer, UT techs Hailey Ward, CA 10-0

Quarterfinals - Sage Mortimer, UT techs Katalina Bartlet, FL 10-0

Semifinals - Sage Mortimer, UT pins Estrella Dorado Marin, CO 0:54

100lb Junior Greco-Roman

But Mortimer wasn't done mauling after the junior women's tournament. Because there is no female equivalent, Sage was eligible to compete in the Greco-Roman tournaments. Mortimer did just that, making weight at 100lb yet again and entering the junior Greco-Roman bracket.

Mortimer would go 2-2, but that would be enough to place in the top eight of the 11 person bracket. Mortimer took loses to the fourth and sixth placers but would win her bloodround and seventh-place matches, scoring offensive points in all four bouts.

RESULTS:

Round of 16 - Ronan Schuelke, IL pins Sage Mortimer, UT 4:15

Consi Round of 12 - Sage Mortimer dec. Alex Randell, IL 2-2

Sage is no stranger to competing against men. Last season in Utah Mortimer finished with a 37-13 record competing against mostly male competitors, capping things off with a fourth-place finish in the class 3A state tournament at 106lb.

Sage Mortimer is a big reason why things are trending in such positive directions for women in the sport of wrestling. Lucky for us, we get front row seats to the astonishing progress at events like Fargo.
