Our own Wrestling Nomad remembers rooting for Helen Maroulis as she made American history at the 2016 Olympics by beating two-time Olympic champion Saori Yoshida in the Olympic finals.

Within a month or so of starting to work at Flo, we had to cover the Olympics, Junior Worlds, and Cadet Worlds all in a row. This is my favorite time of the year, when all that matters is rooting on Team USA against someone from another country; that becomes especially important in an Olympic year. The two Olympic gold medalists in Rio that year were both from my home state of Maryland. First, we got to see Helen Maroulis become the first American woman to win a gold medal in wrestling, and then, just a few days later, were able to watch Kyle Snyder become the youngest champ in U.S. history. I was in high school the same time Maroulis was, and I got to coach against Snyder while he was in high school. Starting off my life here at Flo by getting to watch those two bring home titles was an indescribable feeling.
