92kg World Team Trials Primer: J'den Found His Weight

One of two new weight classes in men's freestyle, 92kg is for all the tweeners too big for 86kg and too small for 97kg. Chief among them is world and Olympic bronze medalist J'den Cox, who is the top-seeded 92kg wrestler at this weekend's U.S. Open in Las Vegas.

Sometimes fans forget that just because a weight class exists does not necessarily mean it is the optimal weight for someone. This was the case for Cox at 86kg, which he made a few times on the day before weigh-ins but was a tough pull for him.

For a guy who wrestled a few college matches at heavyweight, Cox should be among the world's best at 92kg. An athlete of his caliber, who has an incredibly high ceiling and is dynamic and creative both offensively and defensively, needs to be in a division where he doesn't have to be concerned about cutting weight.

A surprise drop from 97kg though is Hayden Zillmer, who made the national team in both styles last year. A strong 2017 has carried over into a great 2018 for Zillmer, who beat Ty Walz in Cuba and is your two seed down at this weight.

Nick Heflin is already qualified for the World Team Trials after winning the Dave Schultz in November and will likely be the person in the WTT finals opposite Zillmer next month in Minnesota. That is of course, if he is fully healed from an injury he sustained in February in Ukraine.

Enock Francois is making his way back into freestyle after wrestling Greco the past several years, and Deron Winn is dipping his toes back in after transitioning to MMA. Francois is seeded third at the Open, but Winn is somehow not seeded despite making the Farrell finals at 97kg.

Kenny Courts qualified for the challenge tournament by making the Farrell finals and will be competing at the Open. With only he and Cox qualified already, that leaves five or six spots left open for the Trials. Josh Manu and Nikko Reyes are the last two guys seeded, both of whom have a good shot to make it to Minnesota.

Beyond that, two-time AA at 174lb Cody Walters has acquired quite a bit of mass, as well as NCAA qualifiers from this year in Tanner Orndorff, Danny Chaid, and Nathan Traxler. Lastly, we have senior level veterans in Timmy McCall, Kadeem Samuels, and Donald McNeil.
