86kg World Team Trials Primer: Taylor's Weight To Lose

When looking at the 86kg field for the 2018 U.S. Open and World Team Trials, it's pretty clear that this is David Taylor's weight to lose.

Since 2013, Team USA has rolled out four different guys at 86, including Keith Gavin in 2013 at 84kg. J'Den Cox provided consistency the last two years, not just in making back-to-back teams, but also winning medals.

When David Taylor and Kyle Dake moved up for the 2016 season, the hope was that they would provide America with some stability at a weight that won just one medal between 2005 and 2015. Dake is now at 79kg and Cox is up at 92kg, leaving Taylor as the favorite for 86kg.

Although he has never made a senior world team, it is hard to argue that for two years now Taylor has been one of the best 86kg in the world. He wrestles at a pace that most 189 pounders don't remotely feel like matching, and the results have shown that.

Now, it's obvious Taylor is a massive favorite to be the world team rep in Budapest, but will he be pushed for the spot? The main contenders behind him to fill out the last two national team spots are Pat Downey, a 2012 junior world silver medalist, Richard Perry, who has had excellent overseas results but yet to make a national team, and three-time All American TJ Dudley.

The debonair Andrew Spey compiled a list of all the best guys PD3 has beaten over the years, and it is a lengthy list of Division I All-Americans. But as for marquee international wins, they're lacking for Downey, and he has also never made a national team.

Richard Perry was never an AA in college, but that hasn't stopped him from repeated beating Downey on the senior level. Perry is someone who almost seems to do better overseas, having won bronze and silver medals at the Medved, as well as a silver in Ukraine back in February. Additionally, his closest match with Taylor happened internationally, an 8-5 match in the Paris Grand Prix finals.

Perry has unquestionably made great strides on the senior level since graduating from Bloomsburg. He did not qualify for the Trials in 2014, then went 0-2 a year later. At the 2016 Olympic Team Trials, he lost in the consi semis to former NCAA champ and world team member Keith Gavin. Then last year, he finished just outside the national team, fourth overall at 86kg, losing to Nick Heflin in the semis in Lincoln. This could finally be the year the Penn RTC athlete breaks through and finishes top three in his weight.

TJ Dudley has not done much freestyle lately, and doesn't have the best track record in the style. But in a weight with only nine guys currently registered, the South Carolina native is basically a shoo-in to qualify for the WTT challenge tournament. Dudley's best freestyle results are a runner-up finish at what was then called FILA Junior Nationals in 2014, and a fourth place finish at Fargo in 2012.

The Nittany Lion Wrestling Club has yet to register any of their guys, including two-time NCAA champ Bo Nickal. By winning NCAAs, Nickal is already qualified for the challenge tournament next month in Rochester, MN. But he was qualified for the Trials last year and did not compete, which may be the case again this year.
