One of the most anticipated matchups in recent memory is going down May 17 in lower Manhattan at this year's annual Beat the Streets event. Four-time World Champ and 2012 Olympic gold medalist Jordan Burroughs is scheduled to scrap with two-time world champ and 2016 Olympic bronze medalist Frank Chamizo.

But this super match didn't happen by accident. The seed was planted at least as far back as January 18 when Seth Gross, the #1 ranked 133 pounder in the NCAA, bumped up to 141 pounds to take on then #1 ranked Bryce Meredith in a home dual meet. Burroughs was clearly impressed. (Watch the Gross vs Meredith match here.)

Things took off from there, as Burroughs called Chamizo out on Twitter and then published a poster of him and Chamizo on Instagram with the slogan "OWN THE WORLD". Burroughs is the reigning 74kg champ and Chamizo the 2017 70kg gold medalist.

Chamizo clapped back on Burroughs the next day with a series of posts, doubting whether Burroughs could handle his defense, warning Burroughs not to play with fire, and accusing Burroughs of being scared.

After a brief interval, Burroughs went back into the comments of one of Chamizo's smack talking IG posts.

Chamizo kept the heat on after winning the 22nd Oustanding Ukrainian tournament in Kiev at 74kg, letting the world, and presumably Burroughs, know that he is the new "king" of 74 kilos.

Burroughs, savagely, responded with him dining out on a nice Italian meal.

The post did not go unnoticed by Chamizo, who born in Cuba but is a naturalized Italian citizen who competes for Italy.

Another month and another tournament championship, this time in Bulgaria, and Chamizo is back on Instagram, putting the 74kg field, and presumably Burroughs again, on notice.

Burroughs responded by pointing out that you can't be the king until you beat the king, and with subtext suggesting that Chamizo should, respectfully, back tf up.

Chamizo, paying no mind to the subtext, immediately replied with a statement asserting that he is already king and that he is merely coming for Burrough's crown, which suggests that it is merely an ornamental headpiece and not a physical embodiment of conveyed authority.

Trash talk aside, all of this tit-for-tat has been prelude to an irrefutably epic matchup. That Burroughs and Chamizo leaned into their social media to generate a rivalry where none previously existed just speaks to their marketing savvy. Whether or not you cared for it is irrelevant at this point. The hype has been build regardless. All that's left to do is wait for May 17 and enjoy.
