3 Can't-Miss Matches At Dream Team Classic

Obviously, the Cliff Keen Dream Team Classic is filled with talent.

Each matchup is going to be filled with some high-level technique and an incredible amount of action on Saturday in Brownsburg, IN. However, there are three bouts that you are not going to want to miss.

1. #2 Brayton Lee, IN vs. #3 Jacori Teemer, NY

This should go without saying, but this is the premier match of the night. A pair of multiple-time state champions (Jacori Teemer has five titles, Brayton Lee has three) will be one of the best battles of the year. The amount of action that the both of them brings to the mat will keep everyone entertained till the final whistle.

So let’s take a look at each guy, starting with Teemer.

By now I’m sure you’ve all seen him stand up straight and bait his leg, allowing his opponent to get in on a shot. While most think that he is just being cocky or arrogant (and kind of is, in a way), this is actually a tactic he employs to sit in the corner and look for a cradle. I doubt he will bait Lee, but certainly, this is a position to be cautious of when shooting on Teemer.

Despite putting himself on defense, Teemer has a pretty dynamic offense in which he can either hit you with a strong double or go up top and hit a throw like we saw him do against Sammy Sasso to make the Cadet world team.

On the flip side of this matchup is the grinder, Brayton Lee. The Minnesota recruit has great positioning and has bricks for hands that allow him to stay heavy on the head and control ties. Lee may have the most advantage in the ties and only because Teemer doesn’t like to spend much time there. While Lee stalks with heavy hands, Teemer does so with distance and his long arms that helps him work from space.

This bout is a complete clash of styles. Lee has to be cautious of Teemer’s tricks, while Teemer has to be ready for six long minutes of tough hand fighting and nonstop pressure.

2. #6 Cole Matthews, PA vs. Kris Rumph, IN

This match is a diamond in the rough. When you look at the matchups, you see a top 10 guy taking on an unranked wrestler, making it easy to just gloss over. But this is actually going to be a tough match.

Cole Matthews is a human gyroscope. When you think you’ve got him taken down he’s still scrambling, and somehow you end up on your back. Check out his match from this year’s Pittsburgh Wrestling Classic if you don’t want to take my word for it. Sometimes it’s his best offense.

Rumph, who just finished third at FloNationals, is very good at attacking from an angle. It is tough to find any tape on him where he attacks straight on. Even his re-attacks come from an angle similar to what we’ve seen from Jordan Burroughs, in which he goes with a hook grip to the triceps, pulling his opponent forward and running to the leg. And he’s not wasting any time staying in front. Matthews will have to get to the leg and finish cleanly, which is not going to be an easy task considering Rumph’s head/hands defense.

3. #1 Mason Parris, IN vs. #3 Brandon Whitman, MI

It goes without saying that Mason Parris is a lot to handle. For someone who weighs 220-plus, he moves incredibly well. He’s got great attacks, a high pace, and the gas tank to back it all up. We recently saw him mow down the heavyweight field to claim his second straight FloNational title. Parris has great positioning and dictates the pace of matches in the same way that Brayton Lee does.

Whitman has a tough challenge in facing such a force as Parris. But Whitman can use his Greco background to create some openings and put things in his favor. The future UNC Tar Heel might want to use some Greco ties to slow down Parris in order to generate his own offense.
