Freestyle season gets into full swing at the U.S. Open on April 25-28 in Las Vegas, and we're previewing each weight class to give you an idea of who’s in the mix at both that event and the World Team Trials challenge tournament.

There’s only one weight that can feature two of last year’s world team members in the same bracket. Zain Retherford and Logan Stieber battled as 141-pounders back in 2014 and then again at 66kg during the 2016 Olympic Trials.

With neither sitting at Final X, we will hopefully get to see them battle in the U.S. Open's 65kg finals at the end of this month. Retherford has been bigger than Stieber for quite a few years now but has lost three times in a row to him. Retherford has also never beaten anyone the quality of Haji Aliyev, as Stieber just did at the World Cup.

As for guys already qualified, BJ Futrell won the Dave Schultz and Evan Henderson won the Bill Farrell. Henderson was banged up at the Schultz but then came back strong at the Farrell. Futrell actually did not compete at the Farrell due to an injury, so hopefully, both are at 100 percent for the Open.

Another question mark is if NCAA champ Yianni Diakomihalis will do seniors or try to make his first junior team. Yianni of course wrestled his last couple matches at NCAAs with a torn ACL and may be out for several months.

Jayson Ness looked great last year but then proceeded to go 0-2 at the Trials, as well as losing to Joey Ward and Darius Little at the Schultz. Josh Kindig and Ward will both be representing the Tar Heel WC and fall into a group with Kanen Storr, Anthony Abidin, and Joey Lazor. I, for one, am also hoping that Andy Simmons doesn't just wrestle in the Bill Farrell but shows up for the Open as well.

College guys who could be in attendance include U23 world team rep Joey McKenna, last year's Trials qualifier in Jaydin Eierman, University Nationals champ Robbie Mathers, and Michigan transfer Kanen Storr. Nick Dardanes and Earl Hall recently competed at the Bill Farrell and will likely throw their hats in the ring at the Open.

Since Bill Zadick's world title in 2006, the 65/66kg weight has only wrestled for a medal twice: Doug Schwab at 2007 worlds and Frank Molinaro in the 2016 Olympics. If Stieber can replicate his run at 2016 non-Olympic worlds in Budapest, this may finally be the year to end the drought.
