Time To Get These Seniors Paid
Time To Get These Seniors Paid
Now that these seven seniors have graduated from college wrestling, let's get them paid!
While it was bittersweet for college wrestling fans to see the end of some outstanding young men’s careers on Saturday, it also means they can now be compensated for their wrestling talents. Here are a few guys that are on the shortlist to start getting paychecks, and soon.
Kyle Snyder
The two-time world champion and 2016 Olympic gold medalist is in line to get the biggest shoe deal in the history of our sport, as well as any other endorsement dollars that could be thrown his way. There will be no need to hold his money from USA Wrestling or anyone else now, and hopefully, Snyder is a millionaire in short order.
Zain Retherford
Retherford made his first world team after his junior year of college. That might not guarantee him a shoe deal, but he should get an apparel sponsor of some kind, one that will likely include incentives for making world teams and winning medals. His freestyle career and ability to do camps and clinics should have him living comfortably for the next several years.
Isaiah Martinez
MMA always made more sense for Martinez than wrestling, and the groundwork has already been laid for guys like him to come in right away and make an impact. Logan Storley and Ed Ruth come to mind a few weights ahead of IMar. If he can take a punch, which is really the question about any MMA prospect, he should be able to compete at a high level immediately.
Bryce Meredith
Similar to Martinez, MMA seems like the path for Meredith, fighting at 135lb, but he may also give a run to the Olympics in Tokyo in a couple years. This young man has excellent mic skills and could certainly be someone who cuts a good promo in the cage.
Adam Coon
Talk about a kid with options and ambitions. He might try to play in the NFL, or he might try to be an astronaut (he's majoring in aerospace engineering), or he might try to make some Greco world teams and win a few medals. No matter what, he's one of the hardest-working young men in the country and will likely accomplish, and get paid for, at least one of these pursuits.
Nathan Tomasello
By all accounts, Tomasello will continue wrestling through this Olympic quad and maybe even another. NaTo might need to make a few teams to up his stock, but he seems like a guy Nike could sign to a good incentive-based contract.
Jacob Kasper
While in college and high school, Kasper focused primarily on Greco. But he's also shown an affinity for professional wrestling. He's an athletic heavyweight who can throw and might become a fan favorite with the right mic work and gimmick. Keep an eye on him in the semi-pro circuits in the next few years.
