Seth Gross, Bo Nickal, Zain Retherford, and Zahid Valencia have all been named finalists for the 2018 Hodge Trophy

Hodge Trophy: Gross, Nickal, Retherford, & Valencia Announced As Finalists

The four finalists have been named for the 2018 Hodge Trophy: Zain Retherford of Penn State, Zahid Valencia of Arizona State, Bo Nickal of Penn State, and Seth Gross of South Dakota State.

Criteria for the award include:

  1. A wrestler’s record;
  2. Number of pins;
  3. Dominance on the mat;
  4. Quality of competition;
  5. Past credentials;
  6. Sportsmanship/citizenship; and
  7. Heart

Below are the credentials of the four finalists.

Seth Gross (South Dakota State), JR

  • Record: 29-1

  • Bonus Rate: 80%

Bo Nickal (Penn State), JR

  • Record: 31-0
  • Pins: 16
  • Techs: 1
  • Majors: 6
  • Bonus Rate: 74.2%

Zain Retherford (Penn State), SR

  • Record: 31-0
  • Pins: 17
  • Techs: 5
  • Majors: 4
  • Bonus Rate: 83.9%

Zahid Valencia (Arizona State), SO

Retherford is going for his second straight Hodge Trophy and would become the first two timers since fellow Nittany Lion David Taylor in 2014. If Retherford wins, he'll be the first to win back-to-back awards since Ben Askren in 2007.

Nickal is the only other multiple-time NCAA champion in the group. He was a runner-up his freshman season before taking first each of the past two seasons. Gross was a runner-up last year and Valencia was third at his weight.

Fans can vote for the winner from now until Friday, March 23, at 5 PM CST. The winner will be announced Tuesday, March 27.
