Second round coming up! It's the round of 16, where coveted spots in the quarterfinals are on the line. Everyone's already wrestled at least one match this afternoon -- except Austin DeSanto, who received a medical forfeit in his first match -- they all need to win one at least more tonight if they want to keep their championship hopes alive.

And now for the prime time NCAA action! Prime Time Pig Tail Consolation Action! Then the round of 16

ROUND OF 16

125 Pounds

Crowd is pretty amped. A lot of hooting after the Star Spangled Banner. Honestly I'm pretty pumped too.

Good noise meter before first whistle of round two. Bottom level was "Pittsburgh". Top level was "NBA Cavs game". That's good knowing your audience.

And Fausz v Hayes is our 125 R16 match to start. Moisey v Suriano is also up going on, which is one of the marquee round 2 bouts. Also marquee? Bresser v Lizak and Cruz v Mattin. Folks there are a lot of good 125 R16 matches.

Spencer Lee gets a take down on Welch and starts going to work. He last match was a tech in I think 9 seconds? Maybe 10. Piccininni has a 2-0 lead over Sean Rusell. Both guys are All-Americans, so insert head exploding emoji here.

Nick Suriano with an arm bar and fall over NCAA finalist Zeke Moisey. Rutgers has a quarterfinalist for at least the 4th year in a row.

Lee with "only" an 8-0 lead after 3 minutes of wrestling. Lee with a tech in under 4 minutes. Hmm... maybe he's slipping?

Fausz and Hayes in sudden victory. Bresser with a danger zone takedown over Lizak. Hayes goes feet to back on Fausz! UPSET CITY! Just figuring out if it's a pin or decision at this point. Time runs out and Hayes the #12 seed upsets Fausz the #5.

Cruz with another tighter than expected win, 1-0 over Drew Mattin. Piccininni gets a 6-3 win. And Bresser gets another danger zone takedown in sudden victory to beat Lizak! OR DOES HE? We will review. Great job whoever but the replay of these sequence up on the gigantic arena bigscreen. It looks crystal clear and is the size of a dang cruise ship. The call is confirmed! The Beavers have a quarterfinalist!

Taylor LaMont with a 4-1 lead over Sebastian Rivera in a late starting 125 pound match. And LaMont takes it 6-5 to give Utah Valley a quarterfinalist.

And NaTo gets an injury default, so thats two more important team points for Ohio State.

Results

125 Darian Cruz (Lehigh) DEC Drew Mattin (Michigan), 1-0

125 Ronnie Bresser (Oregon St.) DEC Ethan Lizak (Minnesota), 4-2 SV

125 Louie Hayes (Virginia) DEC Sean Fausz (NC State), 10-4 SV

125 Nathan Tomasello (Ohio St.) M FOR Ryan Millhof (Arizona St.), 14-5 5:00

133 Pounds

Kaid Brock v Bryan Lantry is our first 133 R16 match. And in a battle of first round giant slayers unseeded Tariq Wilson has unseeded Rico Montoya. #1 seeded Seth Gross has a takedown on Mitch McKee in the first 30 seconds or so. Pletcher v Myers just kicked off and Pletcher already up 2-1.

NaTo with a 2-0 lead over All-American Ryan Millhof. Native Pennsylvanians Dom Forys and Scott Parker take the mat as Kaid Brock gets his hand raised for the Cowboys.

Wilson with a 6-0 lead and a mountain of RT in the third. Pletcher holds on for a 4-3 win. Gross leads 7-4 to start the 3rd. Parker with a 3-1 lead over Forys midway through the 2nd.

And now for the fourth time this year, Jack Mueller vs Austin DeSanto. Mueller won all 3 previous matches, though was losing the last match when DeSanto injury defaulted. DeSanto winning the takedown battle is no surprise, but adding back points gives him a 9-3 lead into the second.

Seth Gross wins and advances as the #1 seed. Parker leading 4-2 now, they're on their feet with 90 seconds to go.

Bridges gets the 4-1 victory over Dennis Gustafson while Stevan Micic goes to work on Anthony Tutolo. Micic is winning 8-3 with 4 minutes left in regulation.

DeSanto leading 13-7, RT not a factor (shocker) but DeSanto currently taking injury time. But DeSanto shakes it off and wins by major, 16-8. Drexel gets a quarterfinalist.

Kevin Jack takes a 2-1 lead over Tyler Smith into the second period. Joey McKenna leading 6-0 over Luke Karam as the Buckeyes try and stay perfect. McKenna now with the 14-0 lead and the tech all but sewed up.

McKenna gets the tech and more bonus for the Buckeyes.

Another battle of unseeded wrestlers, Perry of EMU and Diehl of UMD.

And Jaydin Eierman gets in a fall before they can even announce his name. Missouri needed that. And NC State did NOT need Kevin Jack to fall in overtime to Tyler Smith! BELATED UPSET ALERT!

Iowa's unseeded Vince Turk now has Wyoming's #1 seeded Bryce Meredith.

Dean Heil's quest for title number 3 goes through Michael Carr. Heil leads 1-0 in the second. Yianni puts the finishing touches on his major decision of Nic Gil of Navy.

Sa'Derian Perry had a big feet to back on Ryan Diehl to go up 6-0 but Ryan Diehl is making a comeback. It's 8-4, Diehl has over a minute of RT, about 60 seconds left in the third. Diehl goes gator bacon but Perry catches him. Perry came into the this tournament with an under .500 record and now he's a quarterfinalist for Eastern Michigan.

Heil and Yianni win, as expected. Turk is giving Meredith a match. It's 4-2 with 24 seconds to go. But Mereith holds on to win 5-2.

Results

149 Pounds

2nd seeded Brandon Sorensen has Ronnie Perry now in the first 149 pound match of the R16. #1 seed Zain Retherford has Baby J Bannister on the ropes. And there's the fall, giving the many Penn State faithful in Cleveland.

SPEAKING OF PERRYS, RONNIE PERRY JUST TOOK OUT BRANDON SORENSEN. This place just flipped out. 3X AA and #2 seed Brandon Sorensen goes down in the second round!

Boo Lewallen takes a 7-4 lead over Max Thomsen into the third. Boo beat Max 2 weeks ago at Big 12s and is trying to make it twice in two weeks.

Heilmann and Leeth both win. Leeth needed sudden Victory to take out Beau Donahue of NC State.

Tirstsis with a late takedown on Deakin. RT not a factor, Deakin trailing 4-3 with 26 seconds to go. And Tsirtsis holds on to win with the rideout! OR DOES HE! Northwestern wants to challenge. They say there was another stall. Arizona State says no way. Coaches are trading words. In the meantime, Matt Kolodzik quietly wins a 3-2 match over Justin Oliver.

Call is upheld, Tsirtsis moves on!

Results

Troy Heilmann has a 6-2 lead over Iowa State's lone rep, Jarrett Degan, to start the 3rd. Ke-Shawn Hayes is winning 6-0 over Ryan Blees in the 1st. Hayden Hidlay knotted up 2-2 with Taleb Rahmani in the 3rd.

Zilverberg and Shields in a 4-4 brawl. Deakin and Tsirtsis in a 2-2 tie. Both matches in the second. Hidlay meanwhile prevails 4-2.

Kemerer putting it on Paul Fox, it's 6-0 in the first. Alec Pantaleo leads Mitch Finesilver 2-1 going into the 3rd, RT not a factor.

Tsirtsis may have given ASU a quarterfinalist but Josh Shields gets knocked into the consolations by Luke Zilverberg in an upset.

Nolf taking on Andrew Crone. Wins coming quickly as Kemerer gets the fall and Pantaleo wins by regular decision. And now Micah Jordan gets a a pin to keep Ohio State perfect half way through the round of 16!

John Van Brill trying to stop Kennedy Monday's cinderella run. JVB leads 10-3 with 27 seconds left in the 2nd period. Archie Colgan and Tyler Berger meanwhile are in tiebreakers. Van Brill holds on after a late charge by Monday to win 10-7 and give Rutgers their second quarterfinalist.

Chance Marsteller takes on upset specialist Jon Viruet while 149 pounders are still on the mats. This match is 2-2 now going into the third.

Imar with a 2-1 lead on Jon Chavez early in the first. Chad Walsh and Te'Shan Campbell going at it. Walsh with a 2-0 lead. IMar leading 9-4 now. Walsh extends his lead to 6-0 as Ohio State is in danger of dropping their first match of the 2018 NCAAs.

Vincenzo Joseph has a 3-0 lead over Branson Ashworth. Alex Marinelli has a quick 2-0 lead over Wanzek. Wick and Massa are wrestling. So are Anthony Valencia and David McFadden. 165 pounds is too much. I mean literally it's too much for me to keep track of right now. I have but 2 hands to type with!

RL Savage and ZayZay White tied 1-1 in the 3rd. RT not a factor. Cenzo wins 3-1 over Ashworth. Walsh wins by major over Campbell, and the Buckeyes take their first L of the day. Lewis and White go to sudden victory. There's a wild scramble and White gets the 2! Lewis goes to the consolation round and 165 stays as ridiculous as ever!

Marinelli gets the fall over Wanzek, and Iowa gets a quarterfinalist. The Bull trying to make up for a disappointing Big Ten tournament by going big at the NCAAs.

McFadden clinches his victory over Valencia. While Evan Wick is holding on to a slim 6-5 lead over Logan Massa. And Wick will take out Massa! Last year's third place finisher is in the consolations after the second round. Have fun trying to get to the podium in those wrestle backs.

Zahid doing Zahid things. Leads Christian Brucki 6-2 already. BoJo has a 4-2 lead over David Kocer at the end of 3 minutes. Keaton Subjeck and Jadaen Bernstein are tied 5-5 in the 2nd. Jordan Kutler and Jacobe Smith are going at it again. Kutler trying to make it two in a row on the season.

BoJo puts it away 12-3 and the Buckeyes are back to their winning ways. Bernstein and Subjeck are in sudden victory and it's Bernstein, thrice a qualifier and twice a bloodrounder back in the quarterfinals. Myles Amine puts Forrest Przybysz away by tech, 18-3.

#3 seed Daniel Lewis going to work on Yoanse Mejias, leads 8-0 going into the 3rd. Make it official, 8-0 Lewis.

Mark Hall going big against Dylan Lydy, it's 6-1 in the first. Kutler gets a 2-0 lead on Jacobe halfway through the 2nd. I take that back, Kutler had back points taken away. It's 1-1 in the third, and Kutler muscles up a single to a double and drags a toe to get 2 clutch points.

Ramos v Lujan going ham, it's 12-10, Ramos with a precarious lead. Precarious in deed, with a reversal and 4 backs with 15 seconds left its 16-12, Lujan gets the victory!

Mark Hall going for the fall with seconds to go. Lydy is saved by the bell. Hall "settled" for the tech and Penn State fans are not happy.

Bo Nickal takes the mat. Bo Nickal with a 9-3 lead over Jordan Ellingwood in the third. Gravina and Preisch starting up. Max Dean with a 5-0 lead over All-Amerian Drew Foster as we start the third period.

Gravina and Preisch tied 1-1 late in the third. Myles Martin with a 2-0 early over Bowman. Preisch with a late takedown does it but a locked hands almost let Gravina force overtime.

Corey Hazel and Dom Abounader in a crazy one. It was tied 10-10 but Hazel got dinged for unsportsmanlike and Abounader has a 1 pt lead with 4 seconds to go. Apparently the call was Hazel "punched" Abounader. Its bring reviewed. I saw nothing.

Chip Nes taking it to Taylor Venz 10-1 late in the third.

They're still reviewing Abounader and Hazel. Folks this is too much review time. Not a good look imo. Finally they restart with no change to the score and 4 seconds of time on the clock. Abounader circles and wins and gets showered with boos. I don't really know if Abounader deserved to get boo'd but that match sure did.

Shakur Rasheed looking for bonus as always but may have to settle for a major. He leads Daniel Chaid by 9 with under a minute to go. And unseeded Kyle Conel takes out Nate Rotert to punch a ticket to the quarterfinals for Kent State. And Rasheed takes it 14-3.

Kollin Moore gets a major decision as well. He beats Pat Brucki 13-4 to advance. Jared Haught has a 4-2 lead over Cash Wilcke after 3 minutes.

Darmstadt up 2-0 over WIlliams and Mattiace leads Weiler 3-2. Kasuni and Macchiavello gets started. Miklus up on Traxler 1-0 in the third. Macch leads 6-1 over Kasunic. Darmstadt picks up 4 backs but gives up 2 reversal, leads 8-6.

Haught will seal the deal with a 5-3 win over Wilcke. Mattiace and Weiler tied 3-3 going into the 3rd. Miklus wins by a major and Darmstadt wins by major.

Mattiace and Weiler still tied in the 3rd. Mattiace with RT locked up with 37 seconds left. Weiler appears to get a reversal but is called out of bounds. The officials decide to review it themselves. Weiler is awarded the escape. And he gets a TD as time expires to clinch it in regulation. Chris Weiler is moving on to the quarterfinals!

Sam Stoll has Youssif Hemida in a rematch of the Big Tens that Stoll won. Derek White and Tanner Hall are tied 2-2.

Kyle Snyder leads Jere Heino. USA 11 - FIN 4. Snyder gets a tech and Ohio State goes 9 for 10 in the quarters.

Hemdia gets back points late in the match. Hemida knocks of Stoll and the fans don't like Stoll's sportsmanship at the end of that match, or lack thereof, as the case may be.

White and Hall go to tiebreakers. And Amar Dhesi has a cradle on Mike Hughes, which I am not sure how that's possible, but Dhesi does and then gets the pin. The Beavers have two quarterfinalists!

Only 4 matches remain in the championship round this session. Nick Nevills takes the mat against Michael Boykin. Boykin upset Nevills at the Southern Scuffle. Jacob Kasper and Shawn Streck are tied 2-2 in the third. Butler leads Wood 1-0 going into the third. Wood will start on bottom.

Derek White takes it in tiebreakers to give the Cowboys another quarterfinalist over last year's 3rd place finisher at heavyweight. Meanwhile, Kasper takes the match versus Streck in sudden victory, 4-2.

Only Boykin v Nevills and Butler v Wood remain, although somewhere Doug Vollaro is getting ready for a match. And with the sudden victory takedown, Nathan Butler advances over fellow junior freestyle world medalist.

And I typed too soon. I don't know how I did but I forgot about Adam Coon, who has a 6-0 lead on Thomas Haines. Haines escapes and Coon goes whirlybird and chucks Haines to the mat. Coon gets the fall. My apologies for every forgetting about you Mr. Coon.

And now in the final, final round of 16 matches (I promise), Boykin takes Nevills into sudden victory and now into tiebreakers. They go through another SV period and into TB2. Nevills has a one-second advantage in RT. And escapes in 3 seconds. Boykin takes him down! He's leading by 1. Nevills escapes to tie it. Going into the final segment now. Boykin needs an escape. Instead, he gets ridden out! Nevills wins on criteria! The match is tied, but the end it anyway, with a tie score! There is no winner based on points so they go to criteria and Nevills has it on riding time. Huge ride out by Nevills, who makes it 7 Nittany Lions in the quarterfinals!

Results

Well, that will do it for the championship matches of the second session. That was pretty intense, no?

Didn't get an attendance check but it had to have been pretty close to last round's 18,660, if not over.

We'll be back here tomorrow morning for the quarterfinals, live-blogging I mean proving live updates for all the championship matches. It's going to be lit, as the kids say. Apologies for the typos, have a great evening and see you soon!
