There is a new No. 1 wrestler at 235 pounds in the national girls high school rankings, as sophomore Shamia Wells of Elizabethton High School in Tennessee jumped up from No. 3 to take the top spot in this poll. All of the other No. 1 wrestlers from the last ranking held their spot at the top.

The ranking list indicates what the athlete’s previous ranking was for the February 21 rankings. Two of the biggest official girls state championships, California and Texas, were held after the last ranking. The results of these two events were instrumental in changes in the rankings in most weight classes.

This is the fifth set of rankings for the 2017-18 season issued by USA Wrestling, FloWrestling, and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum. The release dates for the rest of the high school rankings for 2017-18 are scheduled for April 11, May 23, and July 11.

Although the high school regular season is over, the rankings will continue into the postseason. There are four major events which will have the biggest impact on the rankings moving forward:

• USA Wrestling USMC Girls Folkstyle Nationals, Oklahoma City, OK, March 22-25
• USA Wrestling Women’s National Championships, Irving, Texas, May 11-13
• USA Wrestling Girls National Duals, Tulsa, OK, June 19-23
• USA Wrestling USMC Cadet and Junior Nationals, Fargo, ND, July 12-20.

The committee will also monitor the state and regional competitions for girls during the offseason, as well as other select tournaments. Athletes who wish to improve their ranking or break into the national ranking are highly encouraged to attend these major spring and summer events.

The next major ranking tournament is the USA Wrestling USMC Girls Folkstyle Nationals in Oklahoma City on March 22-25. There is still time for athletes to register.

The staffs from these three leading wrestling organizations are working together to strategically publish this ranking throughout the year. The girls high school ranking will appear on the websites of all three organizations and be promoted through each of their different media platforms.

This ranking will evaluate all girls enrolled in grades 9-12, and include athletes from all 50 states. There are six states which sponsor official girls state high school championships, while many other states are also developing their girls high school program.

Coaches, parents, and athletes are encouraged to continue providing information about specific athletes and their achievements throughout the year for the committee to consider.
