Top Potential Matchups Of Powerade

The seeds and full entries for Powerade have been released, and with that comes a handful of big potential matchups.

Among the newcomers at this year’s Powerade tournament is Lake Highland Prep, which is making the trip from Florida to compete this Friday and Saturday in Pittsburgh. In addition to some very promising new talent, history is on the line as Gavin Teasdale will look to not only stay undefeated in his high school career but also claim his fourth Powerade title.

Let's check out some of the biggest potential matches at this year’s tournament.

126: Hilegas, Bartlett, & Teasdale

Two returning champs and a returning placer headline the 126-pound weight class. Last year Logan Macri took out Beau Bartlett in the 120 semifinals, putting an end to a potential meeting between Bartlett and Gavin Teasdale. Macri will be at 120 once again this year, but Bartlett could run into returning Powerade champ Sammy Hilegas in the 126 bracket.

This talented group will be nothing short of entertaining. Hilegas and Bartlett have a potential semifinal matchup brewing, with the winner most likely facing Teasdale in the finals.

132: Joey Silva vs. Carson Manville

Silva is coming off an injury that forced him to injury default in the Beast of the East finals after he claimed a title at Ironman. Manville was fifth in the same bracket. Despite his lack of seeding at this tournament, we all know that Manville brings a lot to the table.

Like just about every match these guys have, this could get very aggressive very quickly, and that is exactly how they both like to do business.

138: Jack Davis vs. Cole Matthews

It's good to see Matthews down to weight after not placing at 145 at Ironman. Davis is a returning Powerade finalist where he took a shutout loss to Spencer Lee. Matthews is a returning champ here and had one of the most exciting finals of all last season. Now they are the top two seeds here at 138. Davis has some throws in his back pocket with his Greco background and Matthews is a scrambler. Let’s see who’s hidden tricks come into play in a big way during this one.

160: Carter Starocci vs. Gerrit Nijenhuis

Carter Starocci and Gerrit Nijenhuis are a pair of young talents who have been very impressive. Starocci did double duty in Fargo last year, and Nijenhuis gave Stephan Glasgow all he could handle at last year’s tournament.

182: Trent Hidlay vs. Cody Mulligan

Round two on deck. They just met a little bit ago and Hidlay got the one needed takedown that ended up being the X-factor in the match. I’m guessing that it could be more of the same this time around with a spurt of action you won’t want to miss.
