The Pre-Mids, Pre-Scuff NCAA Team Championship Update

The 2018 NCAA team championship isn't decided anywhere but for three mid-March days in Cleveland. However that doesn't mean we can't indulge in a little midseason speculation anyway.

Before the wrestling world is whipped into a Midlands- and Scuffle-induced frenzy, we thought it would be fun to check in on the team race to see how things are going before everything kicks into high gear.

The current individual rankings, from which all our team-race figuring is derived, can be found here

Those rankings put Ohio State up over Penn State by 25.5 points, though this does not factor in bonus points. To see how the team race shakes out by weight, we can create a point matrix with the top 10 teams, found below.

Ohio State still gets maximum points from Nathan Tomasello at 125. The Buckeyes have also got Kollin Moore and Kyle Snyder earning championship points, plus an astonishing seven other guys ranked in the top eight, giving them All-American points at every weight in the lineup.

Penn State counters with four No. 1s and a No. 2 from its reigning NCAA champs, plus high All-American points from Nick Nevills at heavyweight. Anthony Cassar has already shown he has a very high ceiling at 197, despite not being ranked in the top eight at the moment.

We can also run the numbers through our scientifically tested and PhD-approved NCAA computer simulator. More on how the simulator works can be found here. After you've read that and refreshed yourself with the details, check out the graph below of the top five teams.

There are still plenty of scenarios in which PSU defends its title, but right now, using our simulator and rankings, it is predicted that the most likely outcome this March is a team trophy for Ohio State.

Of course none of this "means" anything, but it's still nice to get a snapshot of where things stand at before the meat of the season begins. Once redshirts get pulled and the postseason lineups solidify, the rankings will change and so will our predicted team scores.

The one thing we can sure of is that the team race won't be decided before the Midlands and Scuffle. So consider this a benchmark to look back upon on March 18, when we try to figure out exactly how our team champions got there.

And above all else, enjoy the rest of the season!
