Match Notes: #2 PSU Defeats #7 Lehigh

Returning NCAA champion Penn State travels to Lehigh to take on the seventh-ranked Lehigh at the PPL Center in Allentown, PA, on Sunday. 

Here's a recap of the match-by-match results:

125: No. 5 Darian Cruz, Lehigh vs. Devin Schnupp, PSU

1st period: After Cruz scores the first takedown with an ankle pick, he then locks up a cradle and picks up the fall in 1:13.

Final: Fall by Cruz, 1:13.

Team Score: Lehigh 6, PSU 0


133: No. 3 Scott Parker, Lehigh vs. Dominic Giannangeli, PSU

1st period: Parker nearly throws Giannageli to his back. However, Giannageli recovers and they go out of bounds. Stalling on Giannangeli. Shot on the restart by Parker to score the first takedown. Escape by Giannangeli makes it 2-1. Slide by from Parker, Giannangeli gets away before Parker can score. 2-1 at end of period. 

2nd period: Giannangeli starts bottom. After riding for a while, Parker cuts him loose to tie it up at 2-2. Duck under by Parker and he throws him to his back with a cement job to pick up the fall in 4:12.

Final: Fall by Parker in 4:12

Note: PSU challenged a headgear pull by Parker, but lost the challenge and the fall stood.


141: Luke Karam, Lehigh vs. No. 18 Jered Cortez, PSU

1st period: Lots of hand fighting and tie ups. Stalemate called with 1:18 left. More of the same on the restart. Cortez drops to an ankle and is in on the shot. Karam fights it off for the final 25 seconds of the period to keep it scoreless.

2nd period: Karam starts on bottom. Change over and up to score the escape and take a 1-0 lead. Shot by Cortez, reattack by Karam, nothing for either guy and they work back to the center with short time left. Shot by Cortez but not enough time to convert. Period ends at 1-0 in favor of Karam.

3rd period: Cortez starts on bottom. Lots of activity from Cortez, trying to get out of legs. Karam does a good job of maintaining control on top and gets Cortez flattened out. Stall warning on Cortez as Karam goes over a minute of riding time. Stalemate with 18 seconds left to wrestle. Karam throws the legs back in on the restart and goes power half but can't turn. Karam rides out to get the 2-0 win.

Final: 2-0 dec. Karam

149: Cortlandt Schuyler, Lehigh vs. No. Zain Retherford, PSU

1st period: Shot by Schuyler, reattack by Retherford to score the takedown and take the lead. They go out of bounds, optional start by Retherford, escape Schuyler, takedown Retherford. Backpoints by Retherford then adjusts to get the fall in 1:27

Final: Fall by Retherford in 1:27

157: Ian Brown, Lehigh vs. No. 1 Jason Nolf, PSU

1st period: Shot by Nolf, reattack by Brown and he's in on leg, but they stop it for PD as Brown was trying to convert. Takedown by Nolf, escape by Brown makes it 2-1. Shot by Nolf, reattack by Brown then another shot by Nolf scores it. Immediately cuts Brown then another attack by Nolf but runs out of room and it's 4-2 with a minute left. Shot by Nolf on the restart to score another takedown and another escape by Brown. Brown flirted with a throw but nothing there. Nolf comes back to score another takedown to score as the period ends. 8-3 Nolf leads.

2nd period: Nolf starts on bottom. Escape by Nolf, takedown Nolf, escape Brown and they go out of bounds. Takedown by Nolf on the restart, escape Brown, another takedown by Nolf makes it 17-6 and they go out of bounds again with 28 left in the period. Escape for Brown, takedown Nolf and it's 19-7 as the period ends.

3rd period: Brown chooses neutral. Blast double for Nolf and then runs Brown out of bounds on the takedown to make it 21-7. Nolf comes out front Brown lifts Nolf and can't finish to get the reversal and Nolf ends up on top somehow then gives the escape and gets another takedown to get the 24-8 tech with riding time.

Final: Nolf gets 24-8 tech fall

165: Gordon Wolf, Lehigh vs. Bo Pipher, PSU

1st period: Wolf quickly scores and tries to go to work with legs but gets to high and Pipher nearly gets the reversal but Wolf comes out on top then the scramble again and Pipher gets the reversal on the second try. Pipher stays down on the ankle and gets hit for stalling. Reversal for Wolf on the restart then Pipher looking for a reversal again but it's stalemated with a minute left. Wolf gives the escape on the restart and gains a takedown on a go-behind. Wolf was going to give the escape but thinks better of it and drops to a leg and gets hit for stalling then gives the escape on the restart and gets another takedown then Pipher gets the escape and Wolf gets a takedown at the buzzer to make it 10-5. Wild first period.

2nd period: Pipher starts on bottom. Wolf going to work on top with legs and he's got over 2 mins of riding time at this point. Wolf gives the escape and Pipher immediately attacks to get the takedown then Wolf comes back to get a reversal off a switch and they go out of bounds. Escape given on the restart, go behind for another takedown for Wolf and the period ends at 14-9.

3rd period: Wolf starts on bottom. Quick reversal for Wolf then he gives the escape and gets another takedown and gives the escape then another takedown for Wolf to go up 20-11 as they go out of bounds. Wolf gives escape to start and gets another takedown and they get stalemated with 24 left. Stalling on Pipher. Wolf gets the 24-12 win with riding time.

Final: Wolf wins 24-12.

174: No. 4 Jordan Kutler, Lehigh vs. No. 2 Mark Hall, PSU

1st period: Tough hand fighting to start. Shot by Hall, but Kutler steps away. Shot by Hall, front headlock by Kutler and it's stalemated. Scoreless first period. Good action from both guys.

2nd period: Kutler starts on bottom. Escape Kutler, shot by Hall and cracks Kutler down, then Kutler falls over the top and they are head to heel and it's stalemated. Good motion and duck under by Hall and he scores the takedown then cuts him, tied at 2-2 to end the period.

3rd period: Hall starts on bottom. Escape Hall to take the lead. Hall looking for that duck again but can't convert as Kutler fends it off. Under a minute to go, Hall leads 3-2. Kutler with the shot and was in deep by can't score as he looked for a cement job off the shot and they go out of bounds with 20 seconds left. Stall warning on Hall, shot by Kutler, Hall defends and wins 3-2.

Final: Hall dec. 3-2

184: No. 4 Ryan Preisch, Lehigh vs. No. 1 Bo Nickal, PSU

1st period: Shot by Nickal and he scores the first takedown, Preisch gets the escape to make it 2-1 quickly. Another shot by Nickal, Preisch fends it off with a front headlock, they break and the period ends with Nickal in the lead.

2nd period: Nickal starts on bottom. Nickal gets the escape to go up 3-1. Not much action and it ends with Nickal leading 3-1.

3rd period: Preisch starts on bottom and get the escape. Nickal with the shot, it gets stalemated with about a minute to go and score at 3-2. Preisch pushing late, Nickal keeps him away and it ends 3-2, Nickal.

Final: Nickal dec. 3-2.

197: Jake Jakobsen, Lehigh vs. No. 11 Anthony Cassar, PSU

1st period: Takedown by Cassar, escape Jakobsen. Shot by Cassar and he scores off a double to go up 4-1 and rides out to end the period.

2nd period: Cassar starts on bottom. Jakobsen riding tough and they go out of bounds with 1:16. Jakobsen got a little high and almost fell off the top as he threw legs but maintains control and readjust to flatten Cassar out. Jakobsen rides Cassar out and the score stays at 4-1. 

3rd period: Jakobsen starts on bottom. He gets the escape to make it 4-2. Just 49 seconds of riding time for Jakobsen after riding out the 2nd period. Shot by Jakobsen, reshot by Cassar and he converts off another double to make it 6-2. Cassar drops down to a leg and gets hit for stalling. Jakobsen up and out on the restart to make it 6-3 then a snap and go behind for Cassar to make it 8-3 and get the win.

Final: Cassar dec. 8-3.

285: No. 10 Jordan Wood, Lehigh vs. No. 3 Nick Nevills, PSU

1st period: Ankle pick attempts from Nevills but nothing there as Wood keeps him away. Underhook to a single but Wood kicks out. Scoreless first period.

2nd period: Nevills starts on bottom. Escape Nevills to go up 1-0. Shot by Wood but he runs out of room before he can get the second ankle and score on the edge. Nevills looks for an underhook to a single again but Wood circles away. Period ends at 1-0 in favor of Nevills.

3rd period: Wood starts on bottom. Good job by Nevills to follow an active Wood underneath and they go out of bounds. Strong ride by Nevills and he gets Wood flattened out to go over a minute of riding time. Wood up to his feet and tries to get out and they go out of bounds in front of the Lehigh bench. Refs looking at the review for a locked hands call. It's a refs challenge, not a Lehigh challenge and the call is confirmed, no locked hands. Nevills rides out and gets the 2-0 win.

Final: Nevills dec. 2-0.
