No. 19 Rider At No. 10 Iowa: MATCH NOTES

The No. 19 Broncs of Rider travel to Iowa City to take on the No. 10 Hawkeyes. Rider has two All-Americans on their roster in No. 8 BJ Clagon at 157 pounds and No. 6 Chad Walsh at 165. The Hawkeyes have six Top 20 wrestlers including No. 2 Brandon Sorensen at 149 and No. 3 Michael Kemerer at 157.

Iowa also have some lineup questions that could be answered today. Might Spencer Lee or Jacob Warner have their redshirts pulled? Is Alex Marinelli healthy enough to go? We'll find out tonight! Follow along by hitting refresh early and often as we provide live match updates, right here!

PREMATCH

Happy Thanksgiving wrestling fans! Hope everyone had a safe, enjoyable and waistband obliterating turkey day. Now heat up those leftovers and dig in for a late November top 20 dual!

Iowa's Potentail Lineup:

Rider's Probable Lineup:

125 Pounds

It's Stickley for Iowa and Jonathon Tropea for Rider. Sorry Spencer Lee watchers, not tonight. Tropea, a redshirt freshman for Rider, gets an early takedown and two nearfall points. Stickley escapes and it's 4-1 in the first. Tropea in on another leg attack and converts. Its 6-1 before Stickley escapes to make it 6-2.

Now Stickley gets in on a deep shot and picks up his first offensive points of the match. The crowd in Carver showers their 125 pounder with applause. An escape for Tropea makes it 7-4, but Stickley gets another TD. Then a two-on-one tilt just before the end of the first period for four big nearfall points, now its 10-7 in favor of the Hawkeye.

Stickely starts the second period down and escapes in a hurry. Then almost immediately takes Tropea down to make it 13-8. Stickley working hard on top and induces two stall points. Now another tilt, which turns into a half nelson and Stickley sticks Tropea for the fall! Stickley broke him.

Team score: Iowa 6, Rider 0

133 Pounds

It's Laux for Iowa and Cefolo for Rider. A lot of upper body ties but no score yet here in the first. First period ends with no scores and no stalling warnings.

Laux starts the second on bottom. Laux sits out and Cefolo starts a crab ride after sinking in a leg and an underhook. Cefolo get's shaken loose and Laux almost gets a reversal. He'll settle for the escape, plus a technical violation that I didn't see. It's 2-0 Laux. Laux with a slick level change, missing one leg and but snags the other. Can't finish the move though and they restart after a potentially dangerous call. Laux shoots again in short time and gets a stall warning out of it, but no points.

Cefolo now starts the third on bottom, trailing 2-0. Cefolo is up and out quickly. Riding time will be in his favor but I doubt it's a factor (there is no scoreboard visible). Another shot by Laux and he gets another stall call. This time it's a point and it's 3-1 Laux. Cefolo looking for that last takedown but has to be careful, another stall call will put the match nearly out of reach. Laux stays aggressive and it pays off as he picks up another takedown. It's 5-1 and that's how it'll end. Laux with a regular decision.

Team score: Iowa 9, Rider 0

141 Pounds

It's Dippery for Rider and Turk for Iowa. Should be a good test for both wrestlers as they're both NCAA qualifier caliber. Turk draws first blood with a double leg, but Dippery reverses him. Dippery then goes to work with his deadly top game and scores a four point tilt just like that. 6-2 Dippery. Turk is tied up pretty good and picks up a stall warning. Dippery trying to hit a roll through tilt, now takes him back the other direction and get's a two count. It's 8-2 already, still in the first.

Turk will wisely elect to begin the second period in neutral. He takes a shot and gets his hands behind Dippery's knees but can't finish. Dippery stops another shot. He probably has a minute of riding time at the moment as well. Turk stays on the offensive but can't break through Dippery's defenses. Turk takes another shot and gets a stall call. He picks up a leg and they scramble. No points as time runs out and the crowd at Carver showers the ref with boos. Looks like Turk got away with a pretty blatant headgear pull too, at least from my vantage.

Dippery starts the third on bottom. Turk rides him tough and there's Dippery's second stall warning, so he gives up a point. Turk will need more though, as that only makes it 8-3. Another stall call makes it 8-4, though Turk has been riding parallel most of the time. Turk can't get any turns and it's a regular decision for Dippery.

Team score: Iowa 9, Rider 3.

149 Pounds

3X NCAA All-American Brandon Sorensen trots out to face Rider's Gary Dinmore. A quick TD and escape makes it 2-1 for Sorensen and the Hawkeyes. Things have slowed down after that initial burst of energy. Though as soon as I type that Sorensen snaps and drags for two more. Sorensen rides out to finish the first and *probably* has RT over a minute.

Dinmore starts on bottom in the second and escapes after about 15 seconds. Sorensen in on a low shot and picks up 2 and a stall warning. Dinmore escapes and Sorensen gets 2 more. Catch and release time as Sorensen lets Dinmoree up. I think it's 8-4 now if I'm keeping track correctly. Another takedown and rideout to end the second. Sorensen in total control.

Sorensen starts on bottom and is up and out just like that. 11-4, I think. Another TD makes it 13-4 (I think, apologies but there are no scoreboards visible). Sorensen rides out the rest of the match and wins a dominating major decision, 14-4.

Team score: Iowa 13, Rider 3

157 Pounds

Two All-Americans on the mat now. No. 3 Kemerer and No. 8 Clagon. A scramble off Kemerer's shot and eventually the Hawkeye scores. Clagon escapes relatively quickly and it's 2-1. Another scramble, also off Kemerer's shot, but this one ends in a stalemate. Another shot by Kem and another stalemate. Got to imagine a stall call is coming soon. Clagon may have sensed this and gets in on a deep high crotch and holds a single. Kemerer cuts the corner though and gets the takedown for himself. 4-1 Kem. He finishes the period on top and gets stalling called on Clagon.

We start the second period with Clagon on top and he promptly collects 2 cautions. The third try is a clean one but Kemerer stands up and is out quickly. Kemerer is right back in on a double, and after a deep sprawl by Clagon, finishes for two. It's 7-1 with lots of RT for Kemerer. Clagon escapes but then cancels that point out by picking up a stall call. 8-2 as Clagon gets in on another shot, but again it's Kemerer who capitalizes. He makes it 10-2 and finishes the period on top.

Clagon starts the third on bottom and escapes after Kemerer goes optional start. There's a flurry at the edge of the mat and Clagon gets his third stalling call. Now another shot by Clagon but Kemerer flattens him. Clagon holds on for a stalemate and keeps it to *just* 11-3. Clagon takes more shots but is stuffed by Kemerer. Clagon finally gets a takedown but Kemerer then gets a reverse and a four point nearfall. That's how the match ends, 18-5 in a dominant performance by Kemerer.

Team score: Iowa 17, Rider 3

That's the half. We'll break for 10. I'll shake out my carpels while you grab more leftovers.

165 Pounds

Still no Marinelli as Kaleb Young steps up to take on Rider's 2X All-American No. 6 Chad Walsh. Walsh looks to be the bigger wrestler, even though Young was rumored to be bumping up to 174. Walsh muscles Young down with a merkel to take a 2-0 lead. Young has his butt in the air but Walsh keeps him from escaping and we get a stalemate. Now Young in a switch and almost converts but Walsh hangs on to a leg and manages to ride out the period.

Young starts on bottom and escapes after not too long. They're in collar ties for most of this period, occasionally trading shots. The second ends uneventfully and Walsh takes a 2-1 lead into the third.

Walsh starts on bottom and granbies himself into a reversal for two. Almost had the peterson. Young hits a switch perfectly this time and makes it 4-3. Walsh then almost gets the third consecutive reversal before settling for the escape. It's 5-3 Walsh. We'll see if the crowd can get Young going. Young throws everything he has at Walsh. Terry is up on his feet and yelling "Wrestle!" A stall point is all Young gets and Walsh hangs on to win 5-4.

Team score: Iowa 17, Rider 6

174 Pounds

Gunther for Iowa and Stinson for Rider. It's eerily quiet in Carver right now. Shots from both wrestlers but no scores. Collar ties mostly. And three minutes are up without any scores.

Stinson starts the second period on bottom. Stinson escapes fairly quickly but the pressure from Gunther induces a stall call. It's 1-0 Stinson in the second. A shot from Gunter in short time gets another stall call and a point for the Hawkeye. Gunther powers through and finishes the takedown at the edge of the mat just before time runs out. It's now 3-1 as time expires in the second.

Gunther starts the third on bottom and escapes almost immediately. More pressure from Gunther and he gets another TD. After an escape from Stinson it's 6-2, Gunther in total control. We go escape, takedown, escape, takedown, stalling, and then time expires. It's 12-3 after RT is added and Iowa wins by major.

Team Score: Iowa 21, Rider 6

184 Pounds

Michale Fagg-Daves for Rider and Mitch Bowman for Iowa. After a tough scramble it's 2 for Bowman. Twice Fagg-Daves is on the brink of escape but Bowman drags him back down to the mat. Bowman with a variety of rides to keep Fagg-Daves in his clutches. The period ends as Bowman amassed a great deal of RT.  Fagg-Daves also got dinged for a stall warning while trying to break free.

Bowman starts the second on bottom. He has much less trouble getting out and earns another point in seconds. Fagg-Daves in on a shot but is stalemated. Then Bowman picks a leg up in the air but Fagg-Daves somehow turns the tables, trips Bowman and covers for 2. Bowman escapes and its 4-2 Bowman. Bowman is back in on a double and converts. Now he's got Fagg-Daves on his back at the edge of the mat. Fagg-Daves in no danger of being pinned but Bowman earns four more. It's 10-2 Bowman at the end of the period.

The start the third in neutral and Bowman quickly gets a TD to make it 12-2. Bowman let's Fagg-Daves up to try and run up the score from neutral. Bowman gets a single leg but the maneuver ends in a stalemate. Bowman grabs a single again, this time he skies it and trips for two. The match ends and after tacking on the RT its a 15-3 major for Mitch Bowman.

Team score: Iowa: 25, Rider 6

197 Pounds

Ethan Laird for Rider and No. 11 Cash Wilcke for Iowa. After some serious hand fighting Wilcke posts an elbow and gets in a low shot. He collects both ankles and finishes for two. Laird works up to his feet and scores an escape point but Wilcke goes right back in on a shot for two more. Now both wrestlers catch a breather as Wilcke has a bloody nose attended to. It's 4-1 Wilcke still in the first. The period ends with Laird on bottom and a lot of RT for Wilcke.

The second period starts with Laird back underneath and the riding time clock still ticking for Wilcke. Wilcke finally lets Laird up after a shove out of bounds. A massive double runs the score up to 6-2. Laird then gets his first warning for stalling on bottom. Wilcke hits a 4 point tilt and is in the process of blowing this one wide up open. Laird gets hit for a technical violation which I didn't catch and it's 11-2 at the end of the second.

Wilcke begins the third on bottom. Wilcke escapes to make it 12-2 and goes in on a shot. There's a flurry and Laird to his credit continues to fight hard. Wilcke gets the TD eventually, and then quickly cuts Laird. It's 14-3. Laird gets a hold of Wilcke's laces but Wilcke kicks out of it. Laird still fighting and almost gets a takedown at the edge of the mat with a body lock. Wilcke sinks double overs and starts an outside trip but by the time they hit the mat time has run out, despite the oohs and ahhs of the crowd. It's 15-3 after the RT point and another major decision for the Hawkeyes.

Team score: Iowa 29, Rider 6

285 Pounds

No. 7 Sam Stoll is your heavyweight for Iowa and Mauro Correnti is the big man for Rider. Stoll has a body lock at the edge of the mat and Correnti goes to his back, possibly trying to avoid going out of bounds and giving up a stall call. It's a blunder by the Bronc and Stoll capitalizes in a big way. He gets the fall in a little over a minute. So you can put it on the board! Iowa runs away with it.

FINAL SCORE: Iowa 35, Rider 6

That'll do it for this the Broncs and Hawkeyes' first ever dual meet. Rider was game but Iowa had too much firepower. Even at their "weak" weights, Iowa is still pretty darn good.

Thanks for reading along and apologies for the typos. Now treat yourself to another slice of leftover pie!
