U23 Worlds: Day 1 Men's Freestyle Draws

For the second time this year, Daton Fix will try to win an age level world title. Just like his previous attempts at the junior and cadet levels, he was not handed an easy road.

Fix, a true freshman at Oklahoma State taking his redshirt year, will be at 57kg. Minnesota sophomore Mitchell McKee is at 61kg, hoping to improve upon his silver medal at junior worlds.

Two-time Iowa All American Sammy Brooks (86kg) is at his third world championships, after a 2011 bronze as a cadet and 8th place finish in 2013 as a junior. At 125kg, three-time Minnesota All American Michael Kroells is competing in his first world championship.

57kg: Daton Fix, OK

Fix lands at the very bottom of a 25 man bracket, meaning he has to win four matches to make the finals. He'll start off with Parviz Ibrahimov (AZE), who has wrestled in five tournaments this year but won just one medal. That would be a bronze at the Ali Aliev in Russia in July, though he wrestled for bronze at the U23 European championships.

After that, he'll have Reza Atri (IRI), who looked like the future of Iran at this weight after Hassan Rahimi when he won the Paris Grand Prix and Medved Prizes at the beginning of 2016. But he went a combined 1-4 between the Yarygin and Senior world this year, another tough match because of Atri's senior level experience but one that favors Fix.

Awaiting in the quarterfinals should be Andriy Yatsenko (UKR), the same guy who Fix beat 10-3 for his junior bronze last year. Since then though, Yatsenko won bronze at senior worlds in Paris this past August.

Any number of possible combinations await in the semis, though we'll say possibly Reineri Andreu Ortega of Cuba. And then the big one in the finals, Khasankhusein Badrudinov, the same Russian who beat Fix 9-6 in the first round of junior worlds last year. If not Badrudinov, it will be Suleyman Atli of Turkey, this year's U23 Euro champ and senior Euro bronze.

61kg: Mitchell McKee, MN

Just like Fix, McKee landed on bottom of his bracket, though his has only 17 competitors and the top half is tougher on paper. Sedat Ozdemir of Turkey is his first opponent, who beat a very tough Shota Phartenadze of Georgia en route to a silver medal at the U23 Euro championships.

After that, he'll see Petro Bileichuk of Ukraine. Bileichuk was second in Romania and fifth at senior Euros so far this year.

In the quarters, he'll either face Ravinder of India or Ali Rahimzade of Azerbaijan. McKee beat Ravinder in a bonkers 16-14 match in the semis of junior worlds earlier this year. Rahimzade was the junior Euro champ.

If he can navigate those difficult matches, he should have a beatable opponent from either Kazakhstan or Kyrgyzstan in the semis.

86kg: Sam Brooks, IL

Brooks' has Israel in the first round, but his quarterfinal opponent should be a familiar one to American fan. Alireza Karimi of Iran was a 2014 junior world champ who went on to win bronze at the 2015 senior world championships in Vegas. Karimi was injured for a spell, including likely while at the Olympics, but since then has won the Takhti Cup, Asian championships and Military worlds. The winner of that match should be in the finals.

125kg: Michael Kroells, MN

Kroells is on the same side as senior world champ Geno Petriashvili of Georgia. His first round opponent is Yusup Batirmurzaev of Kazakhstan. The only results we have on him is a bronze medal at the Kunaev in 2015 and a seventh place finish at this year's Medved.

In the quarters, Kroells could see either Selim Ercan (TUR) or Danylo Kartavyi (UKR). Ercan has been very active this year as this will be his seventh tournament, with his best result coming at the Islamic Solidarity Games, where he won bronze. Kartavyi is wrestling his sixth tournament this year, and won the Romanian tournament back in July.
