If you watched the Dave Schultz Memorial International this past weekend, a couple things probably stood out. One of them is Jon Reader obliterating the 79kg bracket.

The South Dakota State assistant coach blitzed the field at the 20th Schultz, outscoring his opponents 31-1 and not wrestling the length of an entire match. Check out the results of his three first period techs below.

Jon Reader 79kg

Quarterfinal: 10-0 Sung Bog Kim (KOR), 1:38
Semifinal: 11-1 Josh Asper (USA), 2:37
Gold Medal: 10-0 Matt Brown (USA), 1:08

What was he doing so well? The gladiator's weapon of choice this weekend was his gut wrench. Here's him crushing Bog Kim of Korea's ribs in the first match.

But it wasn't just against a no-name from Korea. Here he is finishing off the match against former Maryland All American Josh Asper.

Since the sequence he uses to tech Matt Brown in the finals is just a little too long to gif, you can watch the full match below.

No one was crowned as our world team member this weekend, but Reader certainly threw his hat in the ring at 79kg. He has been clamoring for this weight for two years, and few are bette built for the two day weigh-in rules than the 2011 NCAA champ.

The Schultz title guarantees him nothing, and the world team trials field is expected to be stout. Kyle Dake stands atop the projected heap, and holds a 6-4 win over Reader from December of 2015. Also in the mix will be Alex Dieringer, third on the ladder this past year at 74kg, as well as two-time junior world champ Mark Hall and junior world finalist Zahid Valencia.

Does the 79kg spot run through Brookings? Maybe not, but Reader put the competition on notice this weekend.
