Team USA is sending a rock-solid squad of men's freestylers to Minsk, Belarus, on Sept. 16-17 for the prestigious Medved International.
USA Wrestling just released the roster that will make the trip overseas for what is traditionally one of the toughest freestyle tournaments of the year. The formidable group of six Americans is below.
57kg Nathan Tomasello, Parma, OH (Titan Mercury WC/Ohio RTC)
Maple and Bradley are both No. 2 on the USA ladder, having been runners-up at the 2017 Team Trials. Futrell and Tomasello are both No. 3 at their respective weights.
Graff made the national team in 2016, while Perry was part of a massive 17-man contingent that wrestled in the 2016 Medved. Perry was the highest-placing American at that tournament, taking home a silver medal at 86kg. Kyle Snyder, Logan Stieber, and Aaron Pico all won bronze.
Jordan Burroughs is the last American to win the Medved, which he accomplished in 2015.
Below is an overview of Tomasello, Graff and Futrell's first day draws, courtesy of USA Wrestling:
The USA will have two entries at 57 kg/125.5 lbs., Nathan Tomasello, (Parma, Ohio/Titan Mercury WC/Ohio RTC) and Tyler Graff (Blacksburg, Va./Titan Mercury WC/Southeast RTC). There are 17 entries in the weight class this year.
Tomasello, who is No. 3 on the USA Freestyle National Team, will open against 2011 Cadet World silver medalist Azamat Toibek of Kazakhstan.
Graff, who was fourth in the 2017 U.S. World Team Trials, has Russia’s Egor Potapov in his opening bout.
Tomasello is a senior at Ohio State and an NCAA champion and three-time All-American for the Buckeyes. Graff was an NCAA runner-up for Wisconsin and is a past Freestyle Team USA member.
Another Freestyle National Team member, B.J. Futrell, Philadelphia, Pa. (Titan Mercury WC/Pennsylvania RTC), will compete at 65 kg/143 lbs., which has 17 entries.
Futrell opens with Ashat Slimkhanov of Kazakhstan, who was fifth at the Dmitri Korkin Tournament in Russia. Futrell, an All-American for Illinois, was a 2014 University World silver medalist.
