USA Cadet And Junior Historical Medal Counts
USA Cadet And Junior Historical Medal Counts
American wrestling has been on a recent international tear. We add up the historical medal counts for the cadet and junior teams across all styles to see how the younger programs are contributing to that success.
Team USA has had a great run at the various UWW World Championships this year. An incredible 13 Americans won gold across the three styles and three age groups and 29 won medals of any color.
Additionally, the men's freestyle seniors and juniors won team titles, and the cadet men's freestylers finished in second place.
With the new weight classes being implemented in in 2018, we decided now would be a good time to go back and take a look at the historical medal counts of the junior and cadet teams from 2011 (the first year the Cadet World Championships were brought back) to 2017.
The charts below shows the number of gold, silver, and bronze medals won by the cadet (CD) and junior (JR) teams in men's freestyle (MFS), women's freestyle (WFS), and Greco-Roman (GR) wrestling. As a reference, UWW age ranges for cadets are 15-17 and for juniors it's 18-20. Also it's worth keeping in mind that for all styles there are 10 weight classes for cadet world championships and eight for junior competitions.
The United States' Greco-Roman teams scored their first golds in a very long time this year, when Kamal Bey won 74kg in the junior tournament and Cohlton Schultz won gold in the 100kg cadet-level championship. The last junior gold medal was won by David Olmsted at 60kg in the 1983 tournament held in Oak Lawn, Illinois. The previous cadet Greco gold was won by Joshua Etu at 95kg in the 1997 tournament held in Maribor, Slovenia.
The junior women's squad has maintained a high level of success throughout the seven-year time period, never going without a medal in either age group in any year. No golds were won by the cadets this year, though the drought is only a couple years old. Ronna Heaton won at 49kg in 2015. The last junior gold before Maya Nelson's 2017 title at 63kg was Victoria Anthony at 48kg in 2010.
The cadet men's freestylers have been on an incredible run since the age-level competition was reinstated 2011, placing at least one American at the top of the podium in every annual tournament. Over the last four years Team USA has had at least three gold medals. That's pretty good.
The seven medals and three golds were the best haul for a junior team in recent memory. This year's team trophy winners put an astonishing six wrestlers in the finals out of eight weight classes. This bodes very well for the future of USA Wrestling.
A matrix of total medal tallies for all seven years for each age group and style can be found below.
All six teams won a grand total of 20 world championships medals in each of the last two years.
