Team USA came out hot and collected eight straight wins on the opening day of the Junior Greco World Championships in Tampere, Finland, on Saturday.
After being the last wrestler from Team USA to hit the mat, Cevion Sevarado became the first to reach the Junior Greco World Championship finals. He is the first American wrestler to make the finals since 2000. Shortly after, that historical moment was rewritten as Kamal Bey joined Sevarado by making the finals at 74kg. This marks the first time that two American Greco wrestlers have reached the finals together since 1993.
Bey's run to the finals included nothing but technical fall victories, with the most entertaining win coming in the semifinals when he collected a 19-7 win off a huge throw to put the match away. Severado was incredibly savvy on his way to the gold medal match at 50kg. He showed off every part of his arsenal with throws, great defense, and mat awareness as he punched his ticket to the finals.
Returning bronze medalists Taylor LaMont was downed in the semifinals and will once against wrestle for bronze. Fellow returning bronze medalist Tracy Hancock failed to medal this year after taking a close loss in the quarterfinals and being eliminated when his opponent was defeated the following round.
