Mark Perry Named Hawkeye WC Coach

John Sachs Mark Perry

Mark Perry is heading back to Iowa City to become the full-time freestyle coach for the Hawkeye Wrestling Club, as reported by TrackWrestling.

Perry will be making the move from Illinois, where he has spent the past six years as an assistant coach. A two-time NCAA champ and four-time All American for the Hawkeyes, Perry's main focus will now be putting Hawkeye WC athletes on world teams.

Rumors had been swirling regarding a possible move for Perry, which were discussed at length on episode 201 of Flo Radio Live.

The Hawkeye WC looks drastically different than it did approximately one year ago. In the 57kg Olympic Trials finals, Dan Dennis and Tony Ramos met with a Brands brother in each corner. Now, Dennis looks to be retired and Ramos is coaching at UNC. Additionally, four-time world team member Brent Metcalf is now coaching at Iowa State.

Earlier this month at the U.S. Open, four Hawkeye WC athletes qualified for next month's World Team Trials. Nathan Burak placed third at 97kg, Bobby Telford was fourth at 125kg, Chris Dardanes finished seventh at 61kg and Nick Dardanes ended seventh at 65kg.

Thomas Gilman appears to be the biggest name added to the Hawkeye WC recently, and should be in action this weekend at the Last Chance Qualifier in Rochester, Minnesota.

It will be interesting to see if Perry corners Gilman, as well as if any other recent Iowa grads like Sammy Brooks or Alex Meyer compete. This weekend's champs will qualify for the World Team Trials next month in Lincoln, Nebraska, so make sure to watch every match LIVE on Flo.
