UPDATE: De Pere Wrestlers' Appeal Denied
De Pere wrestlers' appeal has been denied by the WIAA Board of Control.
Live This Week: Feb. 16 - Northern Colorado at Air Force | Feb. 17 - Purdue at SDSU | Feb. 17/18 - New England Prep Championships | Feb. 18 - Iowa at Edinboro | North Dakota St at South Dakota St | Feb. 19 - #2 Penn State at #1 Oklahoma State (Exclusive Live Broadcast)
The eight De Pere High School wrestlers who were ruled ineligible to compete at the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association sectional tournament due to exceeding the 14-meet limit had their appeal heard by the WIAA Board of Control on Friday morning and unfortunately it was denied.
"Our kids, our parents and our coaches represented De Pere High School with class, respect and dignity," said De Pere athletics director Jeff Byczek told Fox11online.com. "They demonstrated everything it means to be an an athlete, a parent and a coach today as they did all year. I'm grateful that they are part of our school and community."
Now that each one of the wrestlers has been deemed ineligible for the tournament, the fifth-place finishers in each weight class will take their place.
On Thursday, a tweet (see below) started to circulate about the De Pere High School wrestling team of Wisconsin and how a scheduling error is costing its wrestlers a chance to compete at Saturday's WIAA Division 1 Kaukauna sectional tournament.
"It was a mistake on our part," De Pere Superintendent Ben Villarruel told the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "We wish we could turn back the clocks, but we can't and the worst part is it has had a significant negative effect on our students who had no play in this. Like every other student that participates in an athletic contest, they just want to participate."
