No. 10 Wyoming Seminary Defeats No. 1 Blair

null
Blair Academy traveled to Wyoming Seminary in Kingston, Pennsylvania, on Friday night as the No. 1 team in the country. The top-ranked Bucs left with a 31-27 loss at the hands of the 10th-ranked Seminary squad.

Blair started on a good note as it shifted its lineup in the beginning of the dual and took an early lead. But some pins from Austin Cooley, Mansur Abdul-Malik and Beau Bartlett helped the host Blue Knights stay within striking distance of the Bucs, which allowed Alfonso Martinez to claim the dual-winning bout to cap off the night.

Blair received huge wins from No. 1 Chase Singletary, who got a 17-1 technical fall, and No. 7 Malcolm Robinson, whose major decision over Will Moss tied the dual at 27-27 before Martinez gave Sem the team victory with his 11-2 win.

PIAA History: Freshman Champions

Winning a PIAA State Wrestling Championship as a freshman is a rare feat. In fact, there have only been 40 freshmen win PIAA titles in the 80 years of the championships. However, there has been a recent surge in freshman champions. There are many factors at play, but the coaching available at the club level prior to high school has allowed more freshman to be ready to compete at a high level than ever before. This decade has produced more than twice the amount of freshman champions from any previous decade in history.
