The 2016 Golden Grand Prix would wind up pitting two 2014 world medalist against each other in the finals of the 97kg weight class. Russia's Abdulsalam Gadisov won a gold medal in Tashkent in the 2014 United World Wrestling World Championships in Tashkent, UZB at 97kg and Reineris Salas Perez won a silver medal the same day at the 86kg.
