The Top 10 High School Matches Of The Year

Josh Conklin Chad Red Luke Pletcher

Across all age levels and styles, the high school season delivered from early preseason bouts all the way through Fargo. Here are the 10 most entertaining and high-level bouts of the 2015-2016 season!

10. Jacori Teemer, NY vs. Mason Phillips, Washington

Holy smokes what a final. Down late, Teemer forces a scramble and gets two-point exposure for the lead, but gets reversed! Then as time nearly expires Phillips goes for the gut, and Teemer steps over to finish off the match. Watch the whole match, but the end especially.

9. Sammy Sasso, Pennsylvania vs. Luke Pletcher, Pennsylvania

One of the most exciting no-takedown bouts you'll see. Pletcher and Sasso hit in the Pennsylvania state quarterfinals this year. An illegal head-scissors put Pletcher up 2-1. Sasso was in on the winning takedown late and just missed the winning takedown on the edge of the mat.

8. Mark Hall, Minnesota vs. Austin Bell, Pennsylvania

Bell came out firing for his home crowd during the Pittsburgh wrestling classic. Hall mounted his comeback and showed why he's among the most decorated wrestlers in high school history.

7. Yianni Diakomihalis, New York vs. Luke Pletcher, Pennsylvania

Not many gave Pletcher a shot in this one. He used some great over-collar shrug work to take the lead late. Diakomihalis also had a counter that will make you rewind more than a few times.

6. Kaden Gfeller, Oklahoma vs. Mitchell McKee, Minnesota

Two goers put it on the line at Junior Worlds. This one wasn't decided until LATE in the match.

5. Brody Teske, Iowa vs. Josh Saunders, Missouri

Saunders showed his merit early, scorching to a 7-0 lead, only to be run down late by a relentless Teske.

4. Nick Lee, Indiana, vs. Kanen Storr, Michigan

Storr looked to have the Fargo title in the bag. Lee went for broke late and piled up the points to earn the title in by far the toughest weight of the entire tournament.

3. Chad Red, Indiana vs. Nick Lee, Indiana

Amazing match where the offense of Lee was trumped by the incredible defense of Red. The atmosphere was electric for this Indiana state final, in which Red was going for his fourth title.

2. Gable Steveson, Minnesota vs. Jordan Wood, Pennsylvania

Wood came to the match with revenge on his mind. He scored the opening takedown against Steveson, who blew Wood out a few months prior. We haven't seen Steveson tested like this in some time.

1. Chad Red, Indiana vs. Luke Pletcher, Pennsylvania

I've never watched a high school match and come away more impressed with both wrestlers like I was in this bout. They gave the Snakepit fans something to cheer for. Double-single leg, elite scrambling and offense to boot all at one of wrestling's most incredible atmospheres.
