Before Taylor LaMont pinned long-time rival Mitch McKee in their best-of-three final at the UWW Junior Greco National tournament, Jesse Thielke had been the only wrestler to earn four consecutive youth Greco world team berths.
Now, the Olympic team member has some company—LaMont’s pin in 5:20 in match No. 2 cemented his spot on his fourth straight cadet/junior squad.
Not only did he finish off the tournament in impressive fashion; he dominated from the beginning. In his first bout, he recorded an 8-0 technical fall, then followed it up with a second win with the identical score to advance to the semifinals. There, he teched 2015 Fargo Greco champion Gabe Townsell, 11-0.
Ultimately, the Utah Valley-bound FloNational Champ outscored his opponents 27-0 before claiming a pair of falls to become a junior Greco world team member for the fourth time. As a result, LaMont is our FloWrestler of the Week.
Other FloWrestler of the Week Nominees:
Zahid Valencia: He is on pace to make another junior world team after dominating the 84kg championship. After navigating the tournament, he met up with NCAA champion Myles Martin in the finals and won with a convincing 7-0 score.
Mitch McKee: Recorded four straight tech. falls on his way to the 60kg UWW Junior Freestyle finals, where he pinned NCAA qualifier Seth Gross in 2:15 after he claimed a come-from-behind tech. fall over NCAA qualifier Scott Parker in the semifinals to win the freestyle championship.
Hayden Hidlay: He put together an impressive string of wins to claim the 70kg title at the NE Freestyle Regional tournament at East Stroudsburg. The future North Carolina State wrestler won five straight matches against the likes of NCAA qualifiers Matt Cimato, Sam Speno, Lou Mascola and 2016 All-American Randy Cruz in the finals to win the championship. He only gave up a total of 10 points while scoring 49 of his own.
