D1 Redshirt Report: 165 Pounds
At 165 pounds, we have some hammers that will take the lineup for their respective teams. For a few, we aren't sure about what weight they will wrestle at, so we made some educated guesses.

Logan Massa -- Michigan | 2016-2017 Eligibility Year: Redshirt Freshman

Redshirt Record: 15-1

There’s a ton of excitement and anticipation from Michigan fans surrounding Logan Massa's varsity debut. For the past few years, we’ve watched him compete at a high level not only against his peers, but also against senior-level competition. This week, we’ll watch him at the Olympic Team trials at 74kg.

During his redshirt year, Massa knocked off Shakur Rasheed, Chad Welch, George Pickett and Tyler Marinelli. His lone folkstyle loss this year went to Dieringer, but was one of only a few guys to not get bonused by the Hodge Trophy winner.

In freestyle this year, Massa has beaten Kevin LeValley, Mike Moreno and Nestor Taffur. A year ago at the Junior World Team Trials, he knocked off Joe Smith as well as Jason Nolf! Massa will come in with the potential to place high next year at 165 lbs. He can get to legs against just about anyone, attacks extremely often, and regularly does so without much set-up. His timing is that excellent, and his range is a difference-maker.

Vincenzo Joseph -- Penn State | 2016-2017 Eligibility Year: Redshirt Freshman

Redshirt Record: 10-0

There’s a little uncertainty surrounding super-talent Vincenzo Joseph. He struggled with weight toward the end of the season, and had to move up to 165 lbs.  This move now seems more tactical, since Joseph could be the go-to guy at 165 lbs next year for the Nittany Lions if Nolf stays at 157 lbs.

Joseph went undefeated this year, but didn't notch any elite Division I wins. However, if you look back at his freestyle work last spring, he did beat Anthony Ashnault down at 66kg at the 2015 Junior World Team Trials.

Joseph is a great talent, which is why Penn State targeted him. Whether they thought he’d grow this much, I don’t know, but I expect they’ll figure out a way to use him next year. Joseph can wrestle at a very fast pace, and has an outstanding single-leg that translates across any weight class.

Garrett Hammond -- Drexel | 2016-2017 Eligibility Year: Redshirt Junior

Record: 15-3

It was recently announced that Garrett Hammond would transfer out of the crowded Penn State room to Drexel. With two years of eligibility remaining, Hammond will provide an immediate shot in the arm to the Dragons' lineup.

Over the last two seasons, Hammond knocked off Ryan Preisch, Santiago Martinez, Nick Moore, Connor Brennan, Tyler Marinelli and Dillon Artigliere. That’s a nice group of wins heading into a weight like 165 lbs. We’ve seen that weight has vulnerabilities, with many guys having top-10 potential.

Tyler Marinelli -- Gardner Webb | 2016-2017 Eligibility Year: Redshirt Sophomore

Redshirt Record: 18-6

I was unaware of Marinelli until this year at the Southern Scuffle. I liked what I saw from the Gardner-Webb sophomore, who pulled a legit upset over All-American Jim Wilson of Stanford.

His win over Skatzka may not resonate right now, but trust me when I tell you it’s a pretty nice win. Skatzka will make waves next year up at 174 or 184 lbs.

Here’s Marinelli’s win over All-American Jim Wilson:

Joshua Shields -- Arizona State | 2016-2017 Eligibility Year: Redshirt Freshman

Redshirt Record: 14-3

Here are the first of a few reports from Arizona State's monster class. Shields notched two relevant wins this year for Arizona State as he took out Cornell’s Dillon Artigliere and Penn State’s Shakur Rasheed.

We still don't know what weight Shields will wrestle at this year, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him down at 157 lbs considering Anthony Valencia may be headed to the 165-lb spot. If that does happen, I think Shields could do quite well at 157 lbs.
