Matt Storniolo Named Head Coach At Northwestern

The Interim tag has been removed.  Matt Storniolo is now officially the Head Coach at Northwestern.

The Wildcats finished 2016 with a 2-13 dual record including an 0-9 record against Big 10 competition.  At the Big 10 Championships they finished in 12th place with 11.5 points. At NCAA's Northwestern finished in 50th place with 3 team points.

Northwestern Athletics released the following statement:

EVANSTON, Ill. – Matt Storniolo has been named head coach of Northwestern Wrestling, Vice President for Athletics & Recreation Jim Phillips announced Thursday.

"Matt is the right person to lead this program and provide our student-athletes the best opportunity to excel academically, socially and athletically," said Phillips. "Over seven years at Northwestern he has been a tremendous mentor for our young men, and we're excited to watch him continue to build this program in the nation's premier wrestling conference."

Storniolo served as the interim head coach of the Wildcats last season after six years on the staff as an assistant coach, a seven-year tenure that has included 12 All-America nods and a pair of national Top-10 finishes for Northwestern. As an undergraduate the Pennsylvania native was honored as the 2004 Big Ten Freshman of the Year at Penn State and, after transferring to the University of Oklahoma, earned two All-America honors and a Big Twelve conference championship as a Sooner.

Looking for a sleeper finalist? We all need that guy one guy in our fantasy draft or pick’em contest to blow it open for us by making the finals from a low seed. If you like to follow historical trends you should be able to pinpoint your guy after reading.

Longest Win Streaks Entering The 2019 NCAA Tournament

One of my favorite articles to write every year, the longest win streak entering the NCAA tournament. The cutoff this year is 20 matches, in part because that created a four way tie for ninth.

2019 NCAA Party Crashers, Dark Horses And Sleepers

One of the most frequent questions I’ve been asked since the 2019 NCAA Wrestling brackets dropped is who are my sleepers?  What high seeds could make a run?  They act like they care about my opinion, but really they are scouring anyone for information so they can bolster their fantasy teams and dunk on their friends. I see through every last one of you.

For the eighth time in nine years, Penn State will be the last team on the raised mat on Saturday night, hoisting the NCAA championship trophy. The team race is all but over before it starts, however, just like there are eight All-Americans, four programs go home with team trophies (or five if there's a tie like last year).

Four-Time Qualifiers, Not Yet All-Americans

Qualifying for the NCAA Championships is extremely difficult. Any athlete that can boost an appearance at nationals has accomplished something the vast majority of the wrestlers in America will never come close to achieving. Appear four times at the big dance and you've set put yourself in even more exclusive company.

The light heavyweights close out our previews for the 2019 NCAA Tournament. A weight that routinely produces surprises has been reduced to the Bo Nickal show this year.
