#8 184lbs: #13-Willie Miklus, Mizzou dec. #9-Timothy Dudley, Neb 5-4
Just a few weeks ago this would not have been considered an upset. Miklus beat Dudley for 7th place at the 2015 NCAA Championships. Miklus has struggle lately dropping a few matches and dropped to #13 in the rankings. So it was really a stretch to call this an upset, but the dual importance and late takedown for the win by Miklus got this bout onto the list.#7 157lbs: #17-Dylan Cottrell, WVU dec. #15-Austin Matthews 4-1
Like the Miklus and Dudley upset, this match barely qualifies as the wrestlers are closely ranked and have similar credentials. Cottrell controlled the action and used a nice cross-ankle pick from a russian tie to score the bouts only takedown. Threason this match made the list was due to the impact on the dual meet. This was a big swing match for the Mountaineers, who won the dual 18-14.#6 197lbs: #12-Jared Haught, VT dec. #6-Max Huntley, UM 5-1
This was the 5th place bout at CKLV back in December. Huntley won that match 10-3. This was an upset, but the implications of the result moved it up the list. This victory sealed the dual between Virginia Teach and Michigan prior to the big showdown at 285lbs between Ty Walz and Adam Coon.#5 149lbs: #20-Anthony Collica, OSU fall #5-Evan Henderson 5:35
Coming into the season Anthony Collica was thought to be a title contender at a more optimum weight of a 149lbs. His season hasn’t played out that way. Some of that due to injury, but he is getting heated up at the right time of the season. He registered his 4th straight fall Friday night when he packed #5-Evan Henderson.#4 174lbs: Chandler Rogers, OSU dec. #2-Ethan Ramos 13-8
Ethan Ramos announce his arrival at the 174lb weight class with a win over then #1 Kyle Crutchmer at the Southern Scuffle. His only loss at the weight class was to current #1 Bo Nickal of Penn State in the Scuffle final. The 2015 All-American was ranked #2 in the country by Asics FloRankings.Chandler Rogers is possibly the best back-up in the country as he sits behind Crutchmer. Crutchmer has been out of the line-up recently and Rogers has filled in nicely. Rogers also beat Crutchmer in the consolation semifinal bout at the Southern Scuffle. Rogers came out right away and set the tone with a double-overs throw for a takedown and four nearfall points. As Ramos climbed back in the match, a critical set of nearfall was scored by Rogers as he footswept Ramos back to the mat and covered for the nearfall.
#3 141lbs: #9-Joseph Ward, UNC dec. #1-Dean Heil, OSU 3-1
This was a big upset because of Dean Heil’s consistency throughout the season. Heil was undefeated and the consensus #1 ranked wrestler in the country headed into the dual on Friday. However, his opponent probably didn’t view himself as an underdog headed into the bout. Joseph Ward won this bout in the dual meet last year. Since, that dual Heil made an impressive run at the NCAA tournament finishing fourth, and was undefeated until the final weekend of the season this year. That is why this upset checks in at #3.#2 Clarion 19, PITT 18
Clarion finished the season 7-12 after the criteria victory over the Pittsburgh Panthers Sunday. This is coming off the heels of a 1-16 where the Golden Eagles were shut out by the Panthers 51-0. Coach Ferraro looks to have the program moving in the right direction. In the key stretch of the match from 174lbs to 197lbs Clarion won two bouts in sudden victory and Dominic Rigous came up with a huge fall over Panther, Zach Bruce. This was an impressive stretch of matches for the Golden Eagles following a furious, 13-12, come from behind victory by Pitt’s Cody Wiercioch. To rebound from such a momentum wing speaks a lot about the character of the Golden Eagles.
