Gable Steveson's Journey To Gold
Minnesota native Gable Steveson ended the Cadet World Championships in style Sunday when he won the United State's third Men's Cadet Freestyle gold, and the teams fifth total medal of the tournament.
100kg R1: Gable Steveson tf. Georgios Georgiadis (GRE), 10-0 Steveson took the hard road to the gold medal having to win five matches to claim gold, and coming out of the tougher side of the bracket. Steveson showed no signs of nerves his first match as he picked up a quick first period tech. Steveson hit multiple snap and spins and added a couple gut wrenches to end the match quickly.
100kg R2: Gable Steveson dec. Alimagomed Alikhmayev (AZE), 5-5
The second round brought with the most challenging match of the tournament for Gable. Alimagomed Alikhmayev of Azerbajian was the Cadet European champ this year, and pushed Steveson to the brink. The two traded pushouts early in the match before Steveson was able to pancake Alikhmayev to his back for exposure, and add another takedown to go ahead 5-2. Alikhmayev answered quickly though scoring a pushout and a takedown to tie the match at five. However, Steveson owned criteria and he was able to fend Alikhmayev off enough until time ran out.
100kg QF: Gable Steveson dec. Zuriko Urtashvili (GEO), 13-2 In the quarterfinals against Urtashvili of Georgia Steveson returned to his dominating ways. Steveson was constantly in on the legs of Urtashvili scoring multiple takedowns, and put an exclamation point on the match by sending Urtashvili flying for four to punch his ticket to the semis.
100kg SF: Gable Steveson dec. Soslan Khinchagov (RUS), 10-5 In the semis Steveson squared off against Soslan Khinchagov of Russia. Despite the final of 10-5 the match was controlled by Steveson. Thanks to great defense, and successful leg attacks Steveson jumped out to a 10-3 lead, and was able to cruise the rest of the way to punch his ticket to the finals in his first international tournament.
100kg GOLD: Gable Steveson (USA) dec. Khasanboy Rakhimov (UZB), 9-0 Much like the quarters and semis the finals match was controlled by Steveson. Steveson led from start to finish, and controlled the match on their feet scoring on multiple go behinds takedowns. Steveson completely shutdown Rakhimov's offense, and cruised to the title in his first international tournament and Cadet world championships!
